Getting psyched up for the show on the 3rd in denver.

Check these guys out.
the drummer is an old friend and they come from dallas, so I've seen them 50 plus times (permanent gust list does that ;) ) They were a BIG part of the soundtrack to my life as a youngster.
Now they are called legends.

They defy being pinned down to a genre. Just when i thought i had them figured out, they would put out an album that was more brit pop than country rock.

Their lyrics are SUPER witty and wry. They have a lot of great heartbreak songs.

I KNOW a lot of you would get a kick out of The Old 97's. I think that they are most DEFINITELY the best thing to ever come out of Dallas.

This album sounds like a combination of The XX, Burial and NIN to me. Beautiful musical landscapes and steady flow.

EDIT: I just read that Four Tet had a hand in producing this album. That would explain the Burial/Four Tet sound this album has. I love it.

Yea the Combustion mix. Basically a Meshuggah song set to Rammstein vocals. Story goes that Meshuggah have no ties at all to Rammstein, no contact, they just randomly received the track and were asked to produce a remix. I love the feel of that track. So much groove

finally listening to my (properly pressed) copy of "Your funeral...my trial" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. as with the other reissues, it sounds fantastic. but this one particularly so. i really wish more things were pressed on 180g vinyl and mastered at 45rpm because it makes a HUGE difference.

I tried to listen to the new Bjork album again last night, and it just isn't working for me. The first time I heard it, I thought it would grow on me, but the opposite is the case here. There's some brilliant and beautiful moments in there, some of the arrangements are great, but on a whole it just feels really boring.

Whirr - Distressor

Lately I find myself drawn to bands that blend shoegaze with almost pop-punk/post-hardcore sensibilities. I've been loving bands like Nothing, Title Fight, Pity Sex, etc... however this is probably the most consistently blissful little record that I've found in a while.

Oh yea, you can get it for free from Whirr's Bandcamp. (https://whirrband.bandcamp.com/album/distressor)

P.S. I'd really like to see them do a vinyl repress with the original 'Eyes Wide Shut' cover, lolol

So I saw Damien Rice live again for the third time in seven months. Last night was easily the best. He was really on top of his game. I think it's a safe bet that he's easily one of the top live performers out there right now. I mean when you consider the fact that he has no other musicians to back him up, the things he does on stage are just astonishing:

Lindemann seems to have that effect on Rammstein Fans. I've been listening to more R+ recently since it came out, and I know Space Suicide has since gone back to revisit their catalog as well since the release of Lindemann.

That videos makes me want to see them live again. They always put on a fantastic show. Looking forward to their triumphant return as usual with a new album and tour!

Been enjoying a bit of mixmaking on Spotify---

1. horror movie/80s synth scores and similar vibes
2. Nick Cave: Orbiting (collaborations, rare tracks, and highlights from other band members' past & present projects)
3. Wire: Orbiting (same)

sure! i have quite a few catch-all playlists and mixes you might dig. i only use spotify for mixes as my x5 player can't do mixmaking on the go like an ipod can.

might just be easier to check my profile at this point:

Wilder Wein from this can rape me repeatedly.

That version alone is what ALMOST made me include Wilder Wein in my top 10 R+ songs list over in that thread. It was between WW, Donaukinder or Seemann for the last spot, but at the end of the day... Seemann won as it's just classic. The other 2 being b-sides for a reason I guess. Didn't quite make my Top 10, so they are "B-sides" to my top 10 list as well as b-sides to their records I guess, lol.

^^ Aye, his 90's stuff was kind of hit and miss for me. Loved the Symbol album though, and the Gold Experience.
I didn't like AOA. I think the last great album he did was The Rainbow Children, despite the Jehovah doctrine, musically it's wonderful.
His music has sounded horribly lifeless and plastic for too long, it's time he brought a decent producer on board instead of hiring talentless unknowns because of their love of Jesus and not their production skills.
All my opinion of course...lol!

I have mixed feelings about this record. i thought it was going to be a new Chance the Rapper album.
But it isn't. He barely raps on it, like, at all. Yet it has a picture of him on it.
HOWEVER, it's ACTUALLY billed as "Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment."
So i'm disappointed that it's not exactly a chance the rapper album. In fact, it's not even exactly a hip hop album for that matter.

But at the same time, it's a great record. It's more or less an instrumental album with people rapping on it now and then. And i'm talking live instruments.
I found it to be pretty groundbreaking.
Also, these kids are giving the record away for free.

also, @Charmingly Miserable (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=3645) and @xmd 5a (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=335) , my 57 year old mother had me look up Vince Staples Jimmy Kimmel performance on hulu. She doesn't like rap music, but she said he blew her away and wanted to show it to me and see if i knew who he was. Between that and your endorsements, i'm gonna have to check the record out.

i absolutely love tom waits (my band did a cover of goin' out west last night and i got to play guitar while my lead guitar player took the drums...it was so fun) but i can not for the life of me get into his earlier, ballad-heavy stuff. i like nighthawks at the diner, but other than that, the earliest album i really enjoy (and only about half of it) is heart attack & vine. when it comes to waits, it's all about the avant-garde / drunk blues for me. swordfish trombones was the first album i heard of his and i fell in love with it.

Yeah for sure, walk on by is actually a thousand times more played out than ike's rap 2.

plus there's no point since biggie's 'warning' is the best that use of that sample and no one really has much chance of topping it.

kinda wish someone would sample the outro on 'by the time i get to phoenix' really prominently. that's the best thing isaac hayes ever did by far.

got totally hooked on Paradise Lost. I saw them at a festival a couple of weeks back and really liked some of their songs and the stage presence. I'm not too big of a fan of their newer output I have to say but really like their more grungy-side.

Which albums shall I focus on apart from "believe in nothing"? It's funny, since this seems to be regarded as their literally "lost" phase where they did not know where to go musically.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h010Epjzuk8

I love that whole atmosphere. The way the video is shot and the whole end of the 90ies vibe I get from the guitar sound. For some reason it depresses me a bit which is sad since I relly enjoy this.

Been listening to a load of Prince stuff I've not touched in a long time, among them The Scandalous Sex Suite. This is classic Prince. It's basically a 20 odd min version of "Scandalous" from the Batman album. The first part is classic creepy sex Prince with voiceovers of him seducing Kim Basinger, the second part has Prince taking multi tracked vocals to a new level and the 3rd part has a nice dark and very Prince like guitar solo and further guitar wanking.

Haha sorry I was having a bit of a joke at your expense, sorry.

True story tho, those lads and some others in another hardcore band called Fighting Shit used to come to the UK play in my home town, which is a little market town in the middle of nowhere but we had this bizarrely strong punk and hardcore scene. The lad who played drums in Fighting Shit got into creating orchestral type scores and ended up moving purely in that direction. His name is Olafur Arnalds. If you're not already familiar with him, you need to be.

I believe their rendition was far more influenced by Bob Dylan's recording for his first (self-titled) LP, though certainly some of the group were aware of earlier arrangements. Jimmy's and John Paul's licks seem to be mostly improvised, and bear little relationship to the folk-blues traditional style.

Here is the Dylan recording, which was also done in a single take.

Narrow Stairs by Death Cab for Cutie.

"The wake up call in a rented room sounded like an alarm of impending doom, to warn us it's all a matter of time, before we all burn."

"And when spring arrived, we were taken by surprise as the flows under our feet, bled into the sea, and nothing was left, for you and me."

Some of Ben's best, bleakest lyrics in this. "The news reports on the radio said it was getting worse, As the ocean air fanned the flames; But I couldn't think of anywhere I would have rather been, To watch it all burn away, to burn away. The firemen worked in double shifts, with prayers for rain on their lips, and they knew it was only a matter of time."

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FsYDbmvSL._SY355_.jpg

In constant rotation. "Synapse to synapse, the possibilities thin, I'm dressed up for free drinks and family greetings on your wedding, your wedding, your wedding day, the figures in plastic on your wedding cake, that I took, were so real ... Crashing through the parlor doors, what was your first reaction? Screaming, drunk, disorderly, I'll tell you mine: You were the one but I can't, Spit it out when the date's been set, The white routine to be ingested inaccurately."
