Just heard Godspeed You! Black Emperor's new song "Mladic". The first third is a direct rip-off of Beside You In Time.
They've been doing that song live for over a decade now. So maybe that's why I like Beside You in time so much.

Really digging You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead's new album "Lost Songs". Anyone else listen yet? For once I'm actually inclined to agree with reviews I've read that this is the album that should have come out after Source Tags. It has their maturing songwriting showcased and a little of the epic-proggy stuff but they've brought back quite a bit of that old noise and punk-post hardcore urgency in compared to everything that's come out since since that album, which is now over a decade old.

I was at an acoustic live gig yesterday, some of my friends were playing, and at some point a guest female singer (their friend) sang a couple of songs herself. She has an amazing voice and I also learned she's in a band called Film. I think they have some pretty decent songs, that also fall well within the musical tastes of this board. Allow me to shamelessly promote them here. EDIT: Well, apparently the singer I saw yesterday is not actually part of the band, she's just did some songs in one album. One of them is the video I put below.

Gotta plug my friend Daniel's side project Black Ribbons. Album dropped on iTunes on 10/30 after being shelved for FIVE years. Gothy, 80's synthpoppy, Depeche Mode noir type stuff....can't stop listening to it. His main act is Neverending White Lights which is also definitely worth checking out but I've always loved this stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIFUyp-WFa0&feature=player_embedded
Also, like I said, his main act NWL is fantastic stuff (though he usually just does the music and has a different vocalist for every track), very over the top, campy goth-rock....love it:

Recently acquired the stems/multitracks for "Teardrop" by Massive Attack. There is so much to this song that I've never noticed before, I'm starting to fall in love with these guys all over again. Even just playing them all together without mixing sounds so incredibly different than it does on the album. I've had like 8 eargasms from this song today.
Also a lot of Wolfgang Gartner. The synth that comes in at 0:20 in The Way It Was is absolutely beautiful.

Yeah. I've actively searched for new music to no avail. I've tried to force myself to like some bands but I just can't get into anything. This year has pretty much been NIN, Audioslave, and Tool's 10'000 Days on repeat. It feels so good to actually have new music I'm completely into finally being released. http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/porcupinetree-octanetwisted-cover.jpg
The performance of The Incident was better than I'd expected given the studio version hasn't lasted too long with me. The songs on the 2nd disc are more adventurous, especially the earlier material and the extended version of "Even Less".
http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/80450F/ultimateclassicrock.com/files/2012/09/Celebration-Day.jpg
I won't heap any more of the due praise it is getting, but it's an important record for Zeppelin because it shows how the songs still have a life and how deeply embedded in the culture they will stay. Having documents like this (and Pink Floyd's performance at Live8) means more to me than a cash-grab tour.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51GyE3lZacL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Saw the movie a few days ago, and listening to this now. It has few of the Newman trademarks I like, from films like The Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty (some of it actually reminds me of his WALL-E score) but it's more intriguing then a lot of action scores (this one being his first I believe) you hear. It also makes wonderful use of the famous 007 theme, weaving it through the score and not overdoing it.

It's pretty absurd, right? This appears to be a document of an amazing moment in the history of a lot of the music I am/was into. I realized that, for all the Ministry I listen to, I've never bothered to chase down what their live shows looked like back in the day, and having seen it, I understand why they got as big as they did (and naturally, why TR so often referenced them early on in his career) It just happened that my interest in Ministry waned while I ramped up on other Internet stuff. I'd love to get a copy of the laserdisc video, I was watching a VHS rip on YouTube - although it was a pretty good transfer. Speaking of laserdisc, I found a rip of the laserdisc audio, so now I've got the 7+ minute version of Breathe.

Anyone remember a band who put out an album as a free download in 2007 or 08? I can't for the life of me remember their name; it was posted in the 'Hey, look it's free music' thread on the old ETS but I don't know if you can still access it. They were kind of electronica with 16-bit Nintendo sounds, their album art was multi-coloured lines I think. Man, I wish I could remember their name!

This is going to bug me as I'm pretty sure I remember the album cover and the discussion around the band...fuuuuck. Only band I can think of is The Advantage but they only have like one album and an EP or something and neither have it....fuck it's right there. I'll keep digging.

No I don't think it's them, I first though of maybe them or Sky Eats Airplane, but this was a somewhat lesser-known band, and the EP cover definitely was just 8-bit wavy lines like if your NES went screwy, which Horse The Band doesn't have. I can practically see the cover lol. I actually think it may still be The Advantage since that rings the clearest bell but still....gonna bug me hahaha.
Don't think it's The Advantage...if I recall correctly, this was a bit more electronic and a bit glitchier/heavier.

Argh, it's so frustrating! It's on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't remember it. It was, as you say, quite glitchy and retro with a kind of indie vibe to it. It was very underground I think, not much promotion. I tried using the Way Back Machine to find the old thread, but no luck. Damn!
Edit: FOUND IT!! Euphoria! They're called The Depriciation Guild, an 8-bit shoegaze band from Brooklyn. The album was called In Her Gentle Jaws

Not the biggest Dubstep fan have always been a bit wary and critical of it but tracks like this make you realize Dubstep can be immersive and mind blowing at times, at its best its dark seductive trippy and not too focused on the drop. There remains a strong set of good Dubstep artists out there! This is great.

I'm a little in musical wilderness at the moment, i.e. going from one thing to the next, trying to find my next 'big' thing.
I'm checking out the discographies of Steve Roach, Jorge Reyes, David Sylvian and Mouse on Mars. I'm trying to find a mix of sophisticated ethnic techno, jazz and electronic music that you can also dance to. Most of 'ordinary' ambient music is too bland for me. I need more than just soundscapes, something to occupy my mind with, a melody, a rhythm or samples. I'm also checking out the Norwegian jazz artist Eivind Aarset and some oriental music - Anouar Brahem, Jon Balke & Amina Alaoui.

I've been fighting the flu since Friday, it's largely subsided since yesterday. I've been dealing with personal internal and external stress, mostly self-inflicted. I noticed when I finally took a breath of fucking relief (and some melatonin to sleep), my body wasn't in as much pain. This song came on my iPod shuffle this morning, and it seemed to touch something deep within. Today marks the 30th year on this plane of existence, and and that this song (which I already knew quite well) popping up may as well have been a sign. Maybe whatever it is that's God, or karma, etc, etc. It hit a chord that's going to resonate with me for quite awhile.

YES! nobody ever talks about this band, and this record slipped out in november with little fanfare. breathless, in general, are one of the most underrated bands who make absolutely classic post-punk/dreampop records but get very little praise (also see: sad lovers and giants, and also the trees, and asylum party).
been on a big section 25 kick over here... slept on their first album for a while in favor of the new order produced from the hip, but always now is a real classic:

Good to see he took time away from acting and boning Jessica Biel long enough to make music.
New song is actually pretty good, aside from the lazy Jay-Z verse. FutureSex/LoveSounds is a guilty pleasure of mine so I'm looking forward to a new album from him.

I love JT! There's no guilt about it haha. Actually, I should say I love the combination of JT and Timbaland, because his other producers/collaborators just can't add up.
To be honest, if someone told me Flying Lotus produced this, I would have believed them.

Kind of a bummer that they never did a second album. At least we got Schwein though. Which is kinda sorta similar... I really love those two albums though.

Their major scaled version of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" is actually kind of hilarious.
Also, colleagues of mine are in a band and they finally put together an EP. It's not half bad.

This was such a pleasant surprise when they posted it yesterday! Fucking badass. Love this band - curious if they'll be playing live as a four piece now or if they'll have a touring fifth member...
Currently listening to Atticus Ross' playlist of music that inspired the Broken City score (http://www.rdio.com/people/RdioOnRdio/playlists/2087158/Broken_City_–_Atticus_Ross’_Inspirations_Behind_th e_Soundtrack_Album/). I'm loving it. The title track from the score blew me away, Steve Reich engulfed me in serenity, and now Nina Simone is on... Glorious.

My prediction for hard rock album of the year, sooooooooooooooo good. And to think, back in summer 2002 I told my friends I didn't mind if we were late to the Tool concert because I had heard the opening band sucked. Still regret that to this day.

I can not agree more! I love that record to bits and Patton keeps surprising me with his vocal abilities. The long wait was well worth it!
