I'm listening to all my old Suicide discs of late.
Their second album really is a monumental record. Good to see the original album cover on this video, the current reissue has that horrible quality photo of Alan and Martin.

I can not agree more! I love that record to bits and Patton keeps surprising me with his vocal abilities. The long wait was well worth it!

Agreed. Some of the harmonies going on there sound insane and add so much to the songs. Like on white hat/black hat, i can't tell if it's a choir of gospel singers or patton solo with lots of effects.

Adore that album. It's a hard call but I prefer it to their debut. The reissue cover is bleh but the bonus disc with the demo/rehearsal material is totally worth the asking price.

speaking of great album titles, I was listening to "I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass" earlier

I often forget this is in a NIN forum because I always view musical revolution and speak your mind 95% of the time. Even with the announcement today, it didn't feel huge because ETS didn't crash haha.

Autre Ne Veut - "Anxiety"

At first I wasn't sure if I liked this more than his debut, but you realize when you listen to a new record and it's melodies, hooks and structures are still in your head after giving it a break for awhile....and by the time you revisit it, it's even better than you remember. That's basically where I think I was at with this one. Such a good mix of interesting almost experimetal writing for R&B. Such great stuff here.

Incredible mature R&B record from him, most of these songs are like 6-8 minutes long. It's incredibly refreshing to see someone who treats his records as pieces of music and "art" instead of just an album of catchy go to radio singles and fillers.

In my opinion, I know this record was being written by the time channel ORANGE was released but you can almost see an influence in how some of these songs are arranged. I'm liking it so far, minus one track or something..

I did a fly by listen of the iTunes stream just jumping around. I like what I am hearing. I hope it ranks with how great FutureSex/LoveSounds was. Hard record to top but Suit & Tie (minus Jay-Z) is really good and a good indication along with Mirrors on how this album will be.

David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love This Giant: Quirky instrumentation, lots of brass, danceable, I like it!
I'm really trying to get the Talking Heads (and David Byrne) into my musical canon. It worked really well with 'Remain in Light' and 'More Songs about Buildings and Food'. But the other albums don't seem to interest me enough for now. All this available music on the internet is a waste. Ten years ago, I would have spent at least a week on each of these albums, now I have a listen or two and either keep them or 'throw' them away. I used to make an effort to like something.
Oh yeah, the new Justin Timberlake is quite bold. The retro-style reminds me of Lauryn Hill's solo album by the way. Including Timberlake's previous album into my Top Ten of the 2000's does not look like a fluke anymore.

I've officially bought Woodkid's "The Golden Age" three times, on three formats.

The vinyl (completely prestine condition) and the limited edition story companion book/CD were worth every penny. I ordered them from a dealer I've never even heard of, grooves-inc.com. They delivered relatively quickly, for shipping from Germany (like, a week?), and it didn't cost me a dime. And I just can't get over how beautiful the book is. It's probably the best-looking book I own. Looking at the site now, I'm glad I bought when I did, because the price just jumped up 10 bucks.

Speaking of which, I have an extra download voucher for the album. If anyone wants it, shoot me a PM, and you can own the real deal, legitmately and piracy-free!

Amorphous Androgynous is another alias for the legendary Future Sound of London who i always been a big fan of. They use this name to make swooping ambient psychedelic rock. Noel Gallagher of Oasis asked them to produce his solo album based on the quality of their output. but it didn't happen. I expected it to sound bit like Chemical Brothers but a lot of their stuff is far better.

(Came on on shuffle on my ipod in the car) and was amazed that he actually says that he wasn't sure if he stil had the talent to make a meaningful record, and that the band was playing small to midsize clubs because they werent sure that they meant what they used to. Jai Paul - Jai Paul.

Lots of confusion and controversy surrounding this one....

From Pitchfork...

Following three years of fervent speculation about how and when Jai Paul (http://pitchfork.com/artists/28714-jai-paul/) would follow up his two amazing singles, "BTSTU" (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/12181-btstu-edit/) and "Jasmine" (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/13378-jasmine/), what purported to be the XL Recordings (http://www.xlrecordings.com/) artist's debut album appeared (http://pitchfork.com/news/50320-download-jai-pauls-self-titled-debut-album/) on Bandcamp on Saturday night, comprising 16 untitled tracks (among them the aforementioned singles and a cover of Jennifer Paige's "Crush"). Now, the album has been removed from Bandcamp.Earlier today, a Twitter account that seems to be Jai Paul's tweeted (https://twitter.com/jai_paul/status/323775821561090049):

"To confirm: demos on bandcamp were not uploaded by me, this is not my debut album. Please don't buy. Statement to follow later. Thanks, Jai"

Journalist Owen Myers tweets (https://twitter.com/Owen_Myers/status/323763843631284224) that he received an email from Jai, in which the singer/producer writes, "I will be releasing a statement later today about the illegal leak. I have not released a new record," and "This is an unofficial release. Official releases are handled by XL." His statement is apparently due at 3 p.m. GMT (10 a.m. EST).
Rumors are afoot that Jai had his laptop stolen (https://twitter.com/Owen_Myers/status/323769373439442945), leading to the leak of the album. Apparently, some people have already started to receive refunds (https://twitter.com/MichaelCragg/status/323765813431652353) from Bandcamp. (I bought the record and have not had one yet.)

But it doesn't all quite add up.

Shortly after the album appeared, Imran Ahmed, head of A&R at XL, tweeted (https://twitter.com/lllmran/status/323359048407871488), "Surprise!" Not the expectedly angry words of a man whose most sought-after signing just dumped his debut album online for free without warning. And Grandstand PR, who work with XL, retweeted a Tweet (https://twitter.com/paulepworth/status/323259549857501185) from Paul Epworth saying "Thanks to Jai Paul for finally sharing his wonderful album with the world."

As an intrepid reporter at blog Crack in the Roa (http://www.crackintheroad.com/music/21107-feature-finding-jai-paul/)d points out, anyone who bought the record from Bandcamp on Sunday morning would have received a receipt from a Paypal account linked to an email address that has connections to many of Jai's social media profiles.
Representatives from XL have not responded to requests for clarification.

It is ! Just discovered it and will probably soon run the discography backwards from there. For some reason it made me think of that time when I would bug everyone about "Further Down The Spiral" and make them listen to snippets of it on my crappy Walkman, and the general consensus was that it was music "fit for a morbid cult". It's not as violent but quite as sinister, and it's been a long time since I enjoyed that kind of dark, yet intelligent soundscape.

can anybody point me to some current artists with a kind of a talking heads vibe, using polyrhythms, maybe african percussion with unique synth sounds and such?

I'd love to find new artists along these lines as well, I only know related artists who sometimes, but not always, make music like this. I mostly know them through their relationship with Brian Eno, i.e. Jon Hassell, who played brass on "Remain in Light" (Fourth World Music Vol. 1&2, Power Spot, Aka Darbari Java), Fela Kuti (the inspiration for 'Remain in Light' and everything Afro-Beat), Bill Laswell & Jah Wobble who have made it a habit to combine world music of every kind with modern electronics (for example, Radioaxiom: A dub transmission). Then there are the ambient electronic artists who combine electronic landscapes with, let's say, tribal rhythms, Steve Roach, or Jorge Reyes. But sadly, none of them completely fit the bill. And many of these artists rarely use vocals. David Byrne was/is unique in that way. I am not aware of any recent release of this kind (last 2 years).

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but check out the newest album by Matthew Dear. It has a slight Talking Heads vibe and on Interviews he said that Talking Heads was one of the influences.

Definitely digging Matthew Dear, going to investigate some more. Thanks much

I, too, would like to be turned on to some hot new music. im 33...cool has "passed me by."
I love NIN and HTDA, Boards of Canada, Tool, Tricky, Portishead, the Prodigy, Outkast, Busta Rhymes, Nirvana, Rasputina.
I also LOVE drum and bass. But i've pretty well grown out of metal, and "regular" rock music bores the shit out of me.
Any suggestions?

I'm pretty much in the same boat, early 30s, just got married, have a career, being cool is no longer of interest. Biggest challenge is trying to figure out at this point in life what I love about music and what I find inspiring or interesting now, because a lot of things I used to really like in my teens and twenties I've found myself currently emotionally disconnected from and totally bored with, especially generic rock music like you mentioned. I've let my heart kind of guide me, and now I'm a lot more appreciative of textures and certain sounds that I never had cared about or even noticed previously, and now consequently discovering and listening to a lot of artists I never would have thought I would before. It's kind of give and take.

For example, I used to love NIN for the emotional connection I felt toward Trent's lyrics and singing. Now I can't really relate to a lot of his lyrics anymore because I'm older much more stable and life is more boring, so that emotional part is not as present in the listening experience. In it's place though, I in turn now am listening a lot more closely to the music itself to appreciate the dynamics, sonics, the layers, the mixing, and all that stuff.

Kind of been in a Deep Purple phase at the moment after watching what I think is one of the best episodes of Behind the Music in many years. It's also a testament into the fact that this band should've been in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame years ago and snubbing them is just an insult. Especially to the memory of the late Jon Lord.

i like vision thing a lot and all, but i didn't realise it was this loved! i generally operate in a DJ circle that worships first/floodland and all the early singles. they ignore that record like it never happened. sure, it's trashy, but it's damn fun, in my opinion.

i'm partial to the early singles/b-sides, but this is my favorite album track:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4baio42dmY

ps- it took me years to appreciate the sisters. didn't care for them much in my early gothling days, but it clicked a few years back and i love it. that said, i still prefer their peers (red lorry yellow lorry, march violets, etc.) over the sisters.

In my opinion that style suited them better, much like the style The Cure had on "Three Imaginary Boys" and "Seventeen Seconds", dinamic, fun and a bit gloomy!
