(Or, at least, as far as I understand it.)

I'm not sure Kubrick was the kind of man who would compromise his vision like that though... He adapted NASA camera just because Barry Lindon HAD to be lit with actual candles, so the lighting would be perfectly correct. So, I don't think he ever thought "ohnoes", my movie is gonna get cropped, better put uninteresting stuff on the sides !"

If my hunch is also correct, I've always thought that this was one of those things that were either a complete hit or miss among most members on ETS.
