Hesitation Marks: giving "Impossible Pain" credibility in 2013.

Henrie_Schnee
06-10-2013, 03:24 AM
well, i looked up the meaning of 'hesitation marks' and it refers to wounds made to one's self either leading up to the final cut that causes suicide, or before changing one's mind and deciding to not commit suicide. basically, they are less severe cutting marks caused by attempts to build up courage before attempting the final, fatal wound that causes death. so the lyrics of the song 'hurt' could in fact be the 'hesitation marks' in a way... the lyrics describe him self-harming but end on the optimistic note 'i would find a way....' meaning he did not actually go through with suicide at the end.
so it would seem to me with all of these tie-ins to 'the downward spiral' that he may be trying to pick up where he left off. to perhaps apply more of a modern mind-set to what he was exploring on 'the downward spiral' in terms of concept/texture/etc... i feel it will be very similar album in concept/execution, but will be better musically/lyrically because he's matured more in both music-production and lyric concepts since '94 when 'downward spiral' came out. mind you, this album is coming out just months short of TDS' 20th anniversary, so it's very much uncanny that there's all these very obvious tie-ins. it may possibly be a proper follow-up conceptually to TDS. or it may not? it just seems strange that there's alot of similarities between the two so far...

Thank you!
This is why I joined ets in the first place.

I agree, but I can't imagine the artwork, font, etc. is because TR was like, "man those were cool . . ." Each album has had its own identity including artwork. The similarities on this are too huge to dismiss as totally unrelated.

I think the album will have its own sound, but I'm fully expecting some relation to TDS in concept.

Yes, precisely.

The album hasn't been released yet. I've heard one track. I'm ready to judge it based on the whole. So far, I like what I see and hear. I'm optimistic that Reznor (after all these years) knows what the heck he's doing. I'm excited to see what he has in store for all of us. Does that mean I expect something "different"? Yes but I'm also aware he has his way of finding themes in music that keep with him from album to album...if he shows that, cool. Looking forward to this one big time!

In my opinion, the new album will be a continuation of the story arc of TDS. The new single sounded to me like reflecting on a near death expierience. I think the theme will be post suicide attempt that the character was brought back from, with a more profound appreciation of the gift of life. Or maybe I'm way off base, and we'll get Closer II :P

With international shipping, you'll probably want to shop around a bit - that IS the cheapest I've seen the disc (and the vinyl is £10 more minimum on other sites), but their international shipping rates I have never had to check. However, their packaging is really A+, so it'd survive international transit better than, say, modlife :P

Ordered Deluxe CD from Amazon UK - for delivery on release date (the 2nd in the UK) for £12.76. It's even cheaper at Sainsburys - £10.99 delivered, but that would arrive on probably the 5th from previous experience. How the hell this band can get me excited just by revealing titles of new songs I don't honestly know.

"Copy of A" brings back not too fond memories of "Capital G". "Various Methods of Escape" sounds like an instrumental piece. And how fun wouldn't it be if "Running" turn out to be an Information Society cover?

While TDS was more about a "character's" downward spiral, I believe this album will be more about TR's personal downward spiral with a positve turn towards the end of the album:

"I would for you" - something about his relationship with his wife

"In Two" - the children

"While I'm Still Here" - something about the importance of family and realizing he needs to make the most of those relationships while he is still around.

Of course, this will all be laughably wrong once the album comes out. Even if I am somewhat correct, I'm sure it won't be that obvious and all will be left up to your own interpretations.

(All Time Low is an odd one. I mean, I'm sure it's not about the band, but they kind of have the monopoly on that phrase now).

First thing a thought of was David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes: "Strung out in heaven's high hitting an all time low".

And something else, The Eater of Dreams, is that a metaphor for time? That song "While I'm still here" sounds as if it's about what Trent wants to do with the rest of his life (and Black Noise might symbolize death).

Some of these sound like joke titles (yes, I know they're not). "All Time Low," "Disappointed," "Black Noise," "The Eater of Dreams," etc. sound like B sides off Strobe Light. That said, I remember being wary of a song called "We're In This Together" based on the title, and that concern turned out okay.

"Kinda I Still Want To" would be a dealbreaker.

Same here! I don't mean to fanboy as much but it seems everything so far I've been incredibly happy with...the album title, art direction, the good choice for a strong catchy single...and now especially these song titles.

I just like the way they sound...they feel like classic NIN titles but still something I wouldn't have necessarily expected. I'm really intrigued by Disappointed, Copy of A and Running.

Does anyone remember back in ETS when With Teeth came out they were separate threads for each song? That'd be kind of cool to do that again...

As far as "I Would For You" is concerned, put my vote in for it being an homage to the JA song and not a cover. He has no history of including cover songs on NIN albums proper, unless they're bonus tracks, but he does have a history of referencing things he admires (like naming his band How to Destroy Angels). Seeing how this is his "big return" with NIN, I'd be shocked to see a cover (though I certainly wouldn't mind :D).

Speaking of song titles that have been used before, the Canadian band FM's "Black Noise" is a favourite of mine. Especially in this early arrangement:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zose15iYVM

Not holding my breath for Trent to cover this one, though.

Fun fact: FM's violinist, Nash the Slash, would later wrap himself up in bandages, go solo and perform with... Gary Numan! So, as random as this post may seem, there is a fun connection here.

Don't know what I was expecting exactly, but these songs titles are perplexing. I think it's just that I tend to gravitate towards bands who have interesting names for their songs, something distinctive where you know it's them right away. For instance, only Kevin Barnes would call a song "Malefic Dowery", or Sam Beam with "Godless Brother In Love", or Matt Berninger with "I Should Live In Salt", or Joanna Newsom with "Soft As Chalk" etc. - you just look at the title and think to yourself, "Yep, still the same band." (This is usually a comforting thought, unless the band's style has become boring.) Many of HM's song titles - "Everything", "Find My Way", "While I'm Still Here" - sound generic, like anyone from the top of the pops could've written them. Then there's "I Would For You", which is some maudlin Whitney Houston level shit.

This isn't a criticism, I just love getting the track list of an anticipated album and imagining what each one might sound like based on the name, and these are kind of blank slates - they could easily be Taylor Swift or something. (NOTE: I would love to hear a Taylor Swift song called "The Eater of Dreams." Someone please make this happen.)

Am I the only one who finds the song titles underwhelming? Sounds like the tracklist for the next Linkin Park album.

I'm going to be annoyed as fuck if any of the non-intro/outro tracks are instrumentals, too. We've had five albums-worth of instrumentals in the past five years, plus three instrumentals on the last NIN album alone. I won't be suffice with anything less than 12 fully formed songs between tracks one and 14.

Kind of... The only one that really grabs me is The Eater Of Dreams, and that's just the intro. But then again, this is all completely out of context.

Frankly all of them could be called "I'm A Belieber (4 Lyfe)" and I'd still love them if they're near the level of his previous work.

Boy, you must've been a nervous wreck when the title of "With Teeth" was announced...

I think people are being way too harsh on this without having heard more than one song. Yes, the NIN logo got cut up again, the "Reznor"-font is back, he's using artwork by Russell Mills, the titles are different than they were in ye olden days... so what? He's rebranding NIN after a hiatus, and he chose to revisit the period where the band, in my view, had the strongest artwork. No offense to Rob, but the digital/analog glitches were starting to grate on me. I think the artwork that has been released is beautiful, and to say that it's recycled is an insult to Russell Mills. This is all-new artwork in the style of an artist, Trent wanted to work with. Would you blame Storm Thorgeson for reusing artwork just because there was often a red thread through his body of work?

Man, I often wonder if people would have gone as apeshit over "The Downward Spiral" and "The Fragile" if the Internet had been as prominent back then as it is now. I'm pretty sure they would've. "Who's Mr. Self Destruct?!", "Sheesh! There's a song on this named 'Starfuckers'?", "I hear he's singing about his granny on it. Conformist", "The artwork is just cut up photos of flowers. TR is a fucking faggot." Ad nauseaum. I'm sure there's some great fucking NIN music hiding underneath those "Hesitation Marks" titles. In fact, on release day, I may well dig up this post again so I can gloat over it. Unless it turns out he's released 14 variations upon "I Like Dudes". Then I'll admit defeat.

And no, I'm not trying to kill any discussions, but to dismiss the whole fucking album at this point is plain stupid. Take a chill pill and let Trent... you know... release it.

I'm very sorry to have upset you guys.

to add to what I was originally saying, I've not been very impressed with the output of trez since year zero, and this, so far, doesn't look like it's going to be a huge leap forward from that sound. Which is fine, i don't feel like I'm owed anything, I'm just saying what I was thinking, ...you know, like you all are doing. I mean, I'm hoping it's good and will gladly eat crow if it is, I just feel like everything I've been exposed to so far has been kind of lacking in creativity and intrigue..

Take this with a grain of salt, didn't see anyone post this, but a guy named Max Power commented on the original article with this;

"Nine Inch Nails even include a cover of Jane's Addiction's "I Would For You" on their new album "Hesitation Marks" which comes out in September. Trent Reznor commented "I've never included a cover song on an actual album before but I just couldn't hesitate, I mean, Perry was the one who suggested that we cover it, his friend Mark was there, actually funny story, Mark was the one who told me not to hesitate, that's how I came up with the name for the new album," chuckles...

sorry, Mick Karn from the band Japan was the bassist for Dance (other than Stormtrooper In Drag, on which Gary played bass and Paul Gardiner [Gary's old bassist], who wrote the song, played guitar). i actually prefer his playing to Pino's, because although it's still rooted in fretless improvisation, it's less all over the place and more focused.

So glad it's not a cover. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but covers on albums typically seem incredibly tacky and usually end up detracting from the album's artistic integrity. Sometimes it can work out, usually with new bands that are talented but still trying to establish their identity, but for a band that is as hugely personal and has a legacy like NIN, I wouldn't like it. Physical gets an exception, because it's a hidden track. Imagine that as track three on Broken or something, though.... No thanks.

Well, I've always thought that Trent obviously knows that it should be "chosen" and not "chose", but "chose" kind of sounds better than "chosen" in the song, so it would be a "poetic/literary/artistic licence", I guess that concept exists in the english language too, in my language it has several meanings, but one of them is that a writer, specially a poet, can ignore some grammar or ortographic rules if he/she thinks that it sounds better, and I always thought that when Trent wrote something incorrectly was in purpose as a literary licence (I'm not sure if this is the correct english term for the thing I'm talking about).

PS: I googled it, and it seems that it's the same in english. Maybe there are certain rules for its use, I'm not sure, but I've always thought that the popular meaning was "write whatever you want if you think that it sounds better". Some people use it as a lame excuse for their bad grammar and ortography, but I think it's pretty obvious when this is the case, and Trent must have read more than a couple of books and has written enough stuff to know his own language pretty well. I guess most of you already knew all of this, but I always read how some of you make fun of his bad english, so I'm not sure if some of you are actually serious about it. XD

Well...forget about cortini videos, adrian belew just posted sth on his facebook wall, a new, apparently bitter song about someone with a heart like a hole. I feel there's gonna be a lil gossip about this in the next months.

You think he was smack talking TR? That would be kinda f-ed up, considering he quotes TR on his home page:

So here's the quote:

"yesterday we finished a new song. the words are:

somewhere
in the dark of night
I know you must feel something,
something isn't right
a heart like a hole
that let's in no light...

the vocal is followed by a massive onslaught meant to be the musical equivalent of a descent through hell. a giant horror of a sound created in the "magic closet" full of pedals.
as with many of the FLUX songs, this one is short but it makes its point!"

It does seem odd that a random tumblr user would be given a link to the album before Pitchfork, COS, SUE, or any of the more established music sites. That said, I think it would be funny if a bunch of folks created faux reviews of the album (positive, negative, and ambivalent) to see what Columbia's response would be. I assume they would want to assert more control and begin to get legit reviews in circulation.

No offense here, but that's kind of a dumb assumption to make :/ I've been a fan since TDS and I do bash new TR stuff I don't like. BUT I also praise the hell out of what I love. Perhaps I'm being too optimistic in thinking that the majority of old school NIN fans know better than to just bash a musician simply because they're not in the same creative state they were 20 years ago.

While I'm not expecting a return to The Slip style releases, I have kind of wondered what's the point of putting out a single months ahead of the album's release in the digital era.

Although at least Queens of the Stone Age did release a bunch of teasers in the lead up to their release to build hype. & the live stream from the Wiltern a week or so before the release was pretty cool, think that's what sold me on getting the album.

Maybe it wasn't completed early enough to have physical copies ready. I wouldn't think you'd want to sell full digital copies months before the physical versions are ready. Physical copies are almost impulse buys these days (except for vinyl die-hards and collectors, who will buy anyway), and you'd lose all those impulse sales.

I too, miss the way Ghosts and the Slip were released. I think, though, at releasing a "single" which is something people still do apparently, is part of marketing and hype. Get it ot the "radio" since there are, in fact, people who still are into that sort of thing.

Trent didnt just sign to a label, he signed to a very large, very conventional label, and theyre going to approach this as conventioionally as possible.

Personally I like the prospect of an old-school launch campaign, with a lengthy run-up, singles, videos, art, interviews, appearances, media features... It's less personal (which corresponds to Trent withdrawing from fan interaction online in recent years), but it makes it easier to get a sense of the album's broader intent and context, and makes it feel more special.

I hope they do a bit more with the campaign, though. It'd be great to see some featurettes delving into the album's creation, or advertising clips like those awesome David Carson ones for The Fragile.

Should probably have posted that in the HM promotion thread, but whatevs.

I like it as well, it builds a hype machine to get you interested in the record. I don't think the promotion will be anywhere near fellow label mate Daft Punk had with Columbia this year...but I think it's doing it's job.

Besides, we only got two months before this thing comes out! We'll all be salivating I'm sure in a couple weeks when NIN play Fuji Rock Fest and we hear some new songs live for the first time! I don't think that's happened since...the With Teeth club tours? I think it probably came about during Performance 2007 too with Beginning of the End and Survivalism making their live debuts before Year Zero was released.

Also, I'd say that going back to a major after all the hubub about labels being useless relics of the past, and that they're model just doesn't make sense anymore, in
conjunction with sky rocketed concert ticket prices, that Trent's kind of already heading down the "money time" road.

I'd say it sounds like a Great Deal if what you're trying to do is put nin to bed, and focus on other things. Which he has claimed to want to do in recent times,

I know this label stuff is never gonna stop sadly, but whether Angels was somehow tied into his NIN Columbia decision is completely irrelevant and not even worth talking about. Was it a package deal? Did the label request NIN? Did he use NIN to ensure HTDA got a great deal? Blah blah blah are you jokers even paying attention?

Look, he was anti label in the 00's because they were greedy fucks who abused the artists that made them tons of money, and when times got tough they threw artistic integrity out the window. He was frustrated with that and decided to try different things to see what worked. Some things did, some were more hassle or costly then they were worth. It was tumultous time in music, and things have since leveled out a bit.

He's not going back to a label now because he wants more money. Or because he wanted to be #1 song on the 5 o'clock countdown. Although granted those may be nice bonuses he'll get out of the deal, I think it's clear they weren't his main motivation. Yeah he wanted exposure for HTDA, but all of that extra money he made he funneled back into art, videos and an amazing tour. Nothing hypocritical about that, and he's basically doing the same thing for NIN.

He went back to a label for both bands because he was tired of doing everything himself. He's got NIN, HTDA, film scores, daisy, year zero television show or other possible ventures, and of course a wife & kids; he can't be paving the way for the industry on the back of his sweat and blood anymore. He did his part and has given more than enough. He doesn't owe next gen bands anything at this point in his career. Now he wants to keep things simple, and just focus on the music/art. Let the suits deal with crunching numbers, marketing, customer service issues etc. That shit takes tons of time and energy and guess what; it has absolutely ZERO to do with the music (which is the only thing that will ultimately stand the test of time).

What the fuck is so wrong about that? He wants to focus on the music? Oh no! Please. The only reasons you guys think labels are the devil was because TR told you they were in the past. Now he's telling you he's got complete creative control and he's working with some cool people who understand more or less what he's about. They are providing a service that is making his life easier. Is his decision going to cost us, the fans, a little bit more money, since more middle men will have to get their cut? Yeah, a bit. But still very reasonable for the marketplace. Do you remember that album(s) you got for free? How about all of those below market value concert tickets? Yeahhhh... you've had it just fine. Let the artist be an artist and fuck off already with the idea that his work or career is somehow devalued because he wants to spend more time on his actual craft, or being a good husband and father.

The same guy who told people to steal his album from his record label because of unfair pricing practices? The same guy who nearly (or maybe did) lose money on the LITS tour because the art was so important to him?

You actually think he'd sell out the legacy of his 25-year-long passion in order to secure a deal with a record company for a new band... because why? He couldn't really do it on his own? C'mon.

I believe what you meant to say was:

It occurs to me that signing to Columbia happened after the Social Network soundtrack stuff, that was Sony, so it would make sense that Trent and Atticus would get to know people from Columbia and then strike a deal for other stuff (funny it seemed to me TR did more promotion for the Social Network film than I've ever seen for NIN, in the form of interviews etc)

Also, I'm inclined to believe Rob Sheridan on the Reddit AMA where he said things were different at Columbia and some cool people work there

Somehow i feel that A is for America
(because i remembered another song:
A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah
Johnny's in America, no tricks at the wheel...)

i believe it's "na na na na na na na na na na"

"Desperately" trying to "convince?"

Dude, that's sad, I hope you didn't really mean to type that.

That would be a healthy choice, yes.

Yes, I meant every word of it.

I like how the people of this board think they have some weird personal relationship with TR, to the point of knowing his motives
or reasoning behind anything he does. There's no less speculation on anything anyone has said compared to what I have, but because I've considered
something more cynical, I must be wrong. I mean, obviously I should expect a lot of that, since this IS a nine inch nails board.

But you are in no position to "desperately" convince anyone of his possible motives, either. And, really, the bottom line is: WHO CARES? Really, it doesn't matter. Especially since none of us may ever know his motives, but particularly because it doesn't affect any of us, so your desperation is unfounded and, well, immature. Sorry, dude, no offense.

I thought pigpen was using sarcaism™ and hyperbole in those posts (about desperately trying to convince us, and being forced to obsess over the album), but maybe I read him wrong.

Seriously? I thought my sarcasm in that comment was pretty obvious, but I guess not.
I wasn't being serious about trying to genuinely convince people of anything. I was simply
putting a thought I had out there. It's not even something I'm convinced of, but the possibility
did cross my mind and I thought "Hey, lets see what ETS thinks of this".. My mistake!

I don't think people are inferring or speculating anything. TR has basically come out and said exactly his reasons for his decision in regards to a label. There is no confusion. Unless you don't want to take him at his word... in which case nobody here is going to be able to help you.

I remember the time when Trent said cool people work at Interscope too....we saw how that turned out

It was the "desperately trying to convince" part that skipped past my sarcasm detector. Anyway, I'm glad you're not serious.

Can someone tell me if the album leaked? I found this link on Youtube but didn't download it because I'm worried it's a virus or something like that. Has anyone tried it?

Ok, thank you for that! I already ordered the deluxe edition but I was just curious and didn't want to try the link.

The day it leaks this site will explode. If you stop by here daily or every couple of days you will know when it leaks. My guess is it won't leak until 1-2 weeks before release date, but when the first shows start in a few weeks we'll get at least a handful of new songs to listen to.

Very true. I can't wait for the first show to see what kind of setlist NIN comes back with. I'm glad TR decided to go back to the full NIN production (Lights In the Sky Tour/The Fragile Tour). I have a feeling we're going to get a diverse setlist. Fingers crossed for Happiness In Slavery live!

Isn't asking for leaks specifically against board rules?

Well, this is a forum dedicated to TR, so boohoo'ing shouldn't be too much of a surprise.
;)
I'll stop now.

Any word on the next single? Is it going to release after the album?

Historically, how soon until snippets appear on Amazon/iTunes?
