Definitely the best Piggy and Terrible Lie I've seen this tour. Looks like he just turned the intensity up tonight. I hope this is a taste of what Tension will be like.

During some of the shows, but I think they just skipped past the part where it would have been played.

Were those extra synths during the outro? Have never heard those before.
That's what I LOVE about this festival run. Everything, especially synth takes (perhaps that's what was meant by Ally's increased role in these live shows), is much more on-the-fly than previous renditions. No two performances are ever the same, at least with musical nuances. Bootleg compilations will be real fun this time around.

Really? It's probably my favorite song from YZ, with The Greater Good and My Violent Heart following closely behind that..

With the sole exception of the BYIT dvd and CD:UK '05 exhibitions, something about THTF live irks me: TR always struggles with chorus vocals by straining.

I hope that the totally-not-synchronized handclap animation in the background of THTF goes away by the time Tension rolls around. I like the mismatched-silhouette effect in general on the song, but whenever it gets to the handclapping bit it just looks awful to me.

I am loving this performance seven ways to Sunday! So many bits in each song that I've never noticed before, so many Trentatopoeias, extra hilarity with the 'freebird'.

Also getting pretty good image w/ the 1080p other than a few drops.

This was a hot debate at my house. It didn't seem to be a kilt per se, perhaps a modified hakama, or some sort of front and back panel added to shorts...

I agree with that for the past shows, but this sure looked drastically different to us tonight. At certain angles, there seemed to clearly be a relatively separate front and back panel -- a kind of long loincloth over the shorts, as it were. (And no, definitely NOT a kilt, we agree there for sure.)

Not that the stream quality really allows for the kind of evidence we need to truly hash out OMG WHAT WAS HE WEARING but hell, that's never stopped us from our heated thought exercises before! :)

Agreed it looked different- but was probably the same thing he's been wearing for some of these shows. Biggest thing was most likely camera angles that was constantly shifting/zooming or going to a different camera. Kind of looked like drooped down overalls that weren't buttoned up.

I was one person from the railing extreme stage left. If you were in that area I didn't hear you. Granted, I'm not hearing much of anything right now.....

and you're right. This was very much a NIN crowd right in front of the stage, which threw me for a loop because everybody else I kept seeing all day were as far from a NIN crowd as you could get. Maybe that's it. Maybe a lot of the other festivals had more alt rock bands so fans of that kind of music stayed for NIN. Here, the people that were here for NIN were the people who braved a whole festival just for NIN (and QOTSA) so they're hardcore fans. Everybody else left. Whatever the reason I was happy to be right in front of the stage with a bunch of fans and no shirtless bros in sight. (There were some shirtless people there but they were more of the "because its so damn hot" type shirtless than "look at my pecs" type shirtless that were all over the place the rest of the day.)

I missed the second half of the show when it was streamed live, and just caught up. I can't help but think that when TR said there were a "few more hits," during the part of the setlist that is knows as the 'hits' section around these parts, that it was a nod to ETS. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but we're not exactly posting in a vacuum here. I feel like he has to be aware of at least the general consensus of his fans / this board. At any rate, last night's show was far and above the best of the ones I saw streamed this tour. Now, on to Tension. If only I can avoid spoilers up until the Atlanta show.... It's so great live and the opening really works (yes, Trent, it is cool), I just don't think he'll do a copy of a festival show and open the set the same way.

The more new songs, the better. Some With Teeth shows had up to 10 new songs in the setlist and while that drastically changed the feel of a NIN show, it really showed off the new album and HM is an even stronger album.

I think you can have more stuff rigged to the ceiling in an arena. The rolling carts were really neat but I'm sure it was a pain in the ass for the crew.

Getting back to the setlist, 9 songs from HM could be possible.
Last show in Montreal, they played 28 songs. 6 from YZ and 5 from The Slip, 3 ghosts.
The rest was mostly the usual hits.

If you take out of the 3 ghosts, bring down YZ to 2-3 songs and Slip 1-2, that gives you 9 songs to add. However, this doesn't give you room for more rare songs.

Am I the only one that thinks "we're here to have a bad time" would have been a great intro to Everything (which all joking aside I really was hoping he would have played at MIA).

DIME has a new source for the MIA Festival:
Lineage: Backhaul Satellite Feed

Video specifications: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC 1080i 29.97 fps
Audio specifications: ~192kbps MP2 stereo
This is the untouched backhaul feed used by youtube to encode their stream.

It may take a while to download as it's nearly 10GB.

Yeah, can someone please, please get this to RITC? I have a fucking 40kbps upload cap (which I can only even use overnight, or else the internet drops to an unusable crawl); downloading that from Dime would destroy my ratio as I could seed for months and never get 10GB uploaded.

I might be able to help -- DIME user with a lotta bandwidth, just unfamiliar with how to get things to the RITC servers. I'll start the DL assuming I can figure out/get help on that part by the time I have it!

Just send RITCNIN a message and let him know that you're interested in uploading the file to his server. He'll take care of you from there.

I doubt he'll play Copy of A again. It's one of those songs that really profit from the effects, like Echoplex with the drum computer, and I doubt he'll open the show the same way he was doing at the festival shows.

eventually In Two / While I'm Still Here / Black Noise
It doesn't require motion tracking, doesn't require video, and barely requires a band.

I think you're forgetting the most important effect of the song and the way its produced on stage; starting a massive show without video, without a band, without a mass of instruments, without intelligent lighting (i.e. the effect of nearly having house lighting), and without anything for Trent to really hide behind...and a small little controller with the simplest of acid lines and "boom chk" drum pattern. THEN the story of the band begins as the song gets more elaborate; Alessandro with an op-1/tapedeck/drum pads, Ilan with drum pads and cymbals, Josh playing wild slide guitar strums on a dobro(?), Robin with a midi kb. Then the story of the production begins as the lighting gets more elaborate and the first screens are brought out; it says "hey, this show doesn't run itself...look at these people literally wheeling things into place."

Then a few songs later, just as you settle into them being in front...they start revealing the stage. If anything, it could be necessary to start the show with it or a similar song set up in the same way so as to maintain the effect of building the stage behind the screens. (There's an interview from the 90s where TR talks about studying some lighting design so as to effectively "reveal" the stage and the space in different ways per each song.)

It worked for "Stop Making Sense" and it works for this. It presents the band in a new light (pun intended). It gives more of a "story" to the members, as you can associate what you're seeing to what you're hearing added to the performance by each person being brought out. It gives a story to the production, as it gets slowly more colourful, elaborate, visual, and mobile from one song to the next.

edit: Oh, and everyone seems to go mental over it. One of the most powerful openings to show in a long time. In the recent production video, TR mentions: "I remember thinking, halfway through the first song, 'is this stupid or is this actually cool?'...and I saw everyone's face light up."
