Can someone recommend a firefox plugin for Mac that will sniff out links to streams? My old one unplug doesn't seem to work any more. Thanks in advance. A PM with links is also sufficient but I would also like the knowledge to do it on my own.

I always consider the soundtracks he and Atticus do as more cohesive versions of the Ghost series.

Any reason for there being no solid physical release date?
Most likely because it's gonna be really, really late and telling us that might put us off buying it

Any reason for there being no solid physical release date?

I wonder if they actually finished the music like a few days ago (or will finish in a few days?). Maybe they still have to get the physical releases made and maybe even figure out the logistics of that? (I have no idea how long something like that takes.)

Not listening to anything till I watch the movie.

I almost took this approach to SN and GWDT, but I gave myself the slack of the few preview tracks available. In the Soundcloud playlist, I think we've been given a creepy-hug to tide us over. Best of luck holding off, though!

I'm listening to the four preview tracks and hearing some bad notes played- I suppose that's the 'curdling spa' music alluded to in the interviews. Of interest is how the playing reacts to what's onscreen.

After reading through this thread, as much as I'd like to support TR and co. by buying from NIN.com, $25 bucks is just way too much for a CD nowadays. I still feel kind of dumb for keeping my Hesitation Marks order, although I pretty much listen to the Audiophile version exclusively, so at least that was an incentive.

Yeah. I decide to listen because I noticed that once the movie stars I almost forget Trent even scored the movie anyways so it doesn't ruin anything. Fincher's movies are too mesmerizing and intense to be paying close attention to the music honestly.

Yes, you are totally right! This was my first thought when I listened to "sampler" songs. But...

THIS IS VERY GOOD!

So now we can conclude that Trent Reznor is (as the score composer) Trentelo Reznoramenti. ;-)

And finally, we know how "Just Like You Imagined" could sound, if Trent decided to cut "Imagined" from its title!

But... THIS IS STILL VERY GOOD!

Given it a listen now. Can't say that it's sucked me in in the same way as TSN sampler did, but obviously a very different vibe between the two scores. Much more impressed by these tracks than I was with the Dragon tattoo sampler. Social Network is a different story though. I do love that these Reznor / ROSS soundtracks always release around this time of year, perfect transitional music. Getting a bit of a Silent Hill vibe from the piano tracks, namely Background Noise (which also sounds quite like a flashbulb track). Just Like You is my favorite, Trents piano playing has always had that certain set-in-stone 'nin-ish' sound to it even outside of his nin work, but here he's breaking away from that almost completely. I had a huge smile on my face the whole time!

Deepvoid
09-24-2014, 08:28 AM
Whereas TSN could have been an instrumental NIN album played over a movie, TGWTDT served more as a landscape and a complement to the movie.
This sampler appears to be the continuity but with stronger songwriting. I cannot wait to see how it connects with the movie.
You can clearly notice that T&A are getting more and more comfortable with the process of writing a movie score.

definitely a similar approach — sustained, warm chords over eighth note bass pulse — but definitely not the same synth(s). i'm sure he avoids going back to those keyboard voices on purpose, like he avoids using the Fragile-era pads made from samples of his voice.

(then again, he did use the same drum machine for "Only" and "Fur-Lined"...)

Loving the preview. After the TGWTDT soundtrack I was somewhat unhyped about a new soundtrack but now colour me rehyped. Then again I haven't played it for a long time so it may not be all that similar if my memory is anything to go by

Who knows - up to this point, the albums with Null weren't ~the soundtracks~, but just the non-NIN and non-HTDA music by Null. That happened to be the soundtracks, but I'm sure if we'd had other projects under it, they wouldda got the number too. Maybe they'll retcon it and say that Null totally means soundtracks, but that could screw with how the film studio deals with releases.

Either way...as I'm unlikely to buy the physical album this time around, I do like the format options offered through NIN.com better than Amazon.

Amazon takes a cut on everything, nin.com doesn't. I am just assuming technically, but every single artist in the world makes more money from their own site than a retailer.
The price is listed in the data for the whole album on the artist page for TRAR - obviously Amazon can change that at any time though.

So after my first spin my favourites would be Technically Missing, Clue Two, Empty Places, Appearances, Strange Activities, Still Gone and the piano in At Risk is soo NIN-ish it would crazy not to like this. Which to be honest? Is quite a surprise because I didn't expect much from this soundtrack. Song that were released prior to this didn't really hit the string with me and I thought this would be sort of meh record, but I was wrong and I'm glad I was wrong, this is really good. The songs I was mentioning can stand on its own, they are good songs. The rest I'm sure will work within the movie. So.. I don't know if this is Oscar nomination kind of quality or not, but I know I like this a lot better then GWDT

Starting this up, really excited to hear it in full. This whole "let's stream it a week early" trend is wonderful, hope it never dies out.

Still really itching for a physical release date on the vinyl, but having it streaming right now is making me a lot less frustrated about that. As long as it doesn't get stretched out to winter or onward, I'll be fine.

So far everything I've heard and everything I'm hearing seems to constantly be switching between a dreamlike fantasy and an absolute nightmare and behind each there's little hints of the other; random noises and distortion behind piano notes, Badalamenti-sounding synths on top of static and electronic groans, etc., and it definitely fits the book well to say the least, cannot wait to hear this backing the film next week.

The strings at the end of Clue Two are some of the most gorgeous and moving things I've heard in any of Trent's work. This is already my favorite score of theirs; it's like they have a lot more confidence and certainty than they did with TSN, it's less spread out than Dragon Tattoo and a lot of this can stand on its own as great music that isn't dependent on the film. I'm in love.

Yeah, I've been reading stuff saying about how creepy, disturbing etc it is, although I haven't listened to it all yet, the overwhelming feelings I'm getting are that it's beautiful and sad. Thinking is there something wrong with me, or have I been into NIN so many years I'm immune to feeling 'disturbed'?

How the hell is it mean when we've got people asking for a download rip of the FULL SOUNDTRACK, five days before its official release? The sampler is one thing (though that's also not really good to do), but this is literally the entire album, a commercial release. I'm surprised Leviathant hasn't come down harder on this thread yet - it's been a mess since yesterday.

I really gotta ask the question now. Where the hell is the difference between listening to a stream and ripping a stream? I for one like to listen to my music offline. And I like to scrobble to lastfm, which is only possible with tagged files. I think we can all agree that 99% of us will buy the album anyway, so where's the problem when someone's asking for a download link? I mean, they're releasing their music a few days early by choice. Freely available for everyone. I don't see any problem at all.

If you don't see a problem, you should be able to make a rip yourself. I have no doubt that everyone here who's asking for a rip has either already preordered or will buy a copy, many even will buy the more expensive vinyl option. The fact of the matter is that just because you want a thing doesn't mean you are entitled to a thing. It's your choice if you would like take that transformative step and make the files that are being streamed to your computer into static files that you can copy around. It's really not that difficult. Takes maybe ten minutes of searching and poking around. You can do it! Unless you're on an iPad.

Here's the thing - we have in the past received very nice requests from a variety of companies who have come across ETS and found people to be distributing links to downloads that are not licensed as downloads. Not cease and desist orders, but the kind of thing you get before that. But it's still unnerving, and I prefer to nip that problem in the bud. Additionally, it makes forums really fucking boring when you get page upon page of "anyone got a rip?" There are websites you go to if you want to find rips, where rips are the primary purpose for their existence. If that's too much effort, but putting your hand out and asking for some digital change isn't, I won't begrudge you that, but I will ask you to go do it on someone else's corner. That's just how I like to do things here, because I've been helping run things here for a dozen years. It's hard to condense all that experience down into a forum reply, and "Take my word for it" is totally unsatisfactory, so I hope I've at least provided a little more background behind this decision than that.

You don't need to argue the semantics of what a download or a stream is with me. You've seen and heard things that you've only seen an heard because I personally helped facilitate turning them into high quality downloads.

I hope that answers your question. Thanks!

Eh. I think it's alright. Some interesting stuff going on in here that's still that trademark Trent Reznor and Atticus fucking around, making music in a studio vibe but calling it the greatest score is a little hyperbolic.

Maybe when I can listen to this outside of work I can dig into it deeper. It doesn't sound as sparse and too long for it's own good like the vibe I got from TGWTDT but it doesn't pack the punch I felt the Social Network score did. I still think that one remains my favorite.

Samples are inevitable with big releases like this. Anyone with half a brain would know that. And why anyone would try and predict anything when it comes to Trent Reznor is a mystery to me. He will always surprise in surprisingly surprising ways.

If no one can predict what Trent will do, why would anyone know when a stream or samples would be available? Your original question was unanswerable by anyone outside of the gone girl camp.

It's good music, more melody and focus than Dragon Tattoo, but like that album it feels rather monotonous to me. TSN has more variety and more high points - and a very memorable main theme, which I think both these subsequent scores have lacked. Though granted a 1-time listen outside the context of the film is probably not the best judge of that.

i disagree about GG being monotone in comparison to TSN. In fact, I feel like GG splits the difference between the pugnacious simplicity of TSN and the intensely woven ambience of TGWTDT. The more i listen to it the more I like it; can't wait to see it with the film.

Just finished listening to the whole thing with headphones and depending on how it complements the movie, this could be Trent’s second Oscar right there.
It already stands on its own beautifully. The movie can only make it shine even more.
I think the songwriting is superior than TGWTDT. I think it follows more of a guiding line than Tattoo.
With that being said, I didn't get the WOW factor I got with TSN but it's damn close.

Glad to hear the consensus is that it stands alone more that TGWTDT.

I love the mood of the Dragon Tattoo score, but it's a slog to get through and works better in small doses. I normally hate those people that try to condense down albums, but the Dragon Tattoo score has one AMAZING disc of music on it, with two other discs of okay-to-good material.

TSN on the other hand, despite working so fantastically in the movie, also totally stands alone to me. It's a great album of music, brimming with creativity. In fact, that's usually what I use it for, especially during shitty school assignments where it's hard to find inspiration.

Really looking forward to this. Tuesday is so close... in theory...

yeah, i need more time with this, but to compare with the other scores so far: TSN, as has been mentioned by others, totally works for me as an album, something i will put on to listen to like any other killer record. TGWTDT is much more background music to me. it worked quite well in the movie, i think. when i have it on while doing other things there are several points in the score where i literally have to stop what i'm doing because the music grabs me. so far i have not heard those moments in the new work. of course two listens to a stream while at work does not count as a fair assessment, i guess.

(I haven't read anything in this thread yet since today's GG release, but I just wanted to share my thought (singular) after a first listen. I plan on giving this thread a good read-through tomorrow.)

It really only got "exciting" toward the 75% mark, just like a real movie should. That might sound like a diss, but in fact it should mean that T&A are really becoming experts; the 3/4 mark is where the action starts to happen, and around the climax is where the music should actually get intense.

Someone earlier in the thread, I think, stated that they thought this is where Trent might truly become a great ST creator; I couldn't agree more. This will not go down as the most "catchy" or "cool" thing he has done. It will go down as the point where just a few more ppl recognize his genius, I hope.

I look forward to the slow, slow burn. Can't wait to see the film and how this music fits in :)

This'll have Null 03 as the catalog number, right? Has anyone asked Rob about that?

Who knows - up to this point, the albums with Null weren't ~the soundtracks~, but just the non-NIN and non-HTDA music by Null. That happened to be the soundtracks, but I'm sure if we'd had other projects under it, they wouldda got the number too. Maybe they'll retcon it and say that Null totally means soundtracks, but that could screw with how the film studio deals with releases.
I believe Null numbers are for things released through The Null Corporation so since this is being released on Columbia, I don't think it would get a Null number.

I listened to the NPR stream and it's simply breathtaking.

One of the few complaints I had with Trent and Atticus' work from 2007 onwards was the loop-based style of songwriting. Of course, it worked beautifully for Year Zero and Ghosts, but, after a while, it had become a bit stagnant. TSN was, essentially, built from loops, and Dragon Tattoo felt like just an extension of the loops we had heard on the Comes Forth in the Thaw website. Welcome oblivion showed hints of a return to a more fluid, organic structure of songs, and Hesitation Marks fully delivered on that front. Now, Gone Girl is the first soundtrack to really satisfy me on a structure basis.

It often sounds "blurry" and avant-garde; I couldn't piece together how many of the songs worked, and it made for an unnerving experience. It didn't shock me in the way Dragon Tattoo did, but I loved how it built upon the sounds Tattoo introduced (I think At Risk had the same "snowy" synth drone present in many Tattoo songs and was the website's background noise for a while). Though still synth-based, it never feels artificial. Of course, part of that is due to the orchestra, but the synth and drum machine loops also feel "real", you know? I can't wait for the 24-bit version to really delve deep into this soundscape.

I can imagine it will still piss off traditional film score fans and reviewers, though, hehe. I'm sure there's gonna be another negative review on Filmtracks.com. Still, it will all make sense when the score is heard in context!

Now, Gone Girl is the first soundtrack to really satisfy me on a structure basis.

i haven't listened to this yet, but i think it's interesting you bring up ghosts/dragon tattoo and hesitation marks in terms of loop-based writing. i feel the complete opposite...that ghosts and dragon tattoo are very organic and that HM is almost all loop-based. interesting...

Honestly that film tracks review was bizarre, the way he singled out the boat race scene as an example of how the score didn't entirely reflect the exertion of the rowers etc...erm, it's kind of a stylised video showcase scene in the middle of the film, and the whole film was mocking of the Winkelvosses hence the comedy Mountain King in electronic form music. It just didn't seem that difficult to understand, and the guy seemed to think all scores should be like Peter & the Wolf, people falling over to a slide whistle. Yet people obviously respect him??

It could be region locked, depending on where you are. It's on Spotify Ireland as well, though it threw me when trying to find it as it's just under "Trent Reznor" instead of "Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross".

It's weird that there's a hidden track on a soundtrack album. I wonder if that little bit at the end is used for a significant ending scene of the film or something.

I can't fully answer this without giving away too much of the ending of the book, but I will say this actually makes sense based on the structure of the story at the end + the track title eluding to things "ongoing" at that point. Think of that extra bit of music as an epilogue, of sorts.

The question mark business for At Risk is legitimate...

He and Mariqueen just had a kid right before both films premiered, so that might be why he didn't attend. Atticus also seems a little shy, so he might not have wanted to go without Trent being there. No new kids this time around, so I guess we'll see what happens.

Have now heard the album. What can I say...

Nothing on there that I disliked, which is a step up from the previous two scores.

Weird to hear a Reznor/Ross composition/album with hardly any 'beat'. From my recollection there wasn't anything resembling drums until Secrets (track 16), and scarcely anything thereafter. That's not to say the songs weren't engaging, as they certainly were, but there weren't enough 'woah' moments for me - nature of the beast maybe, tone of the film, we'll see in a few days. WorzelG made a point about Technically, Missing sounding like it was in the same sphere as TDTWWA (or words to that effect) - I see it, but also wonder what it'd have been like if drums had kicked in at some point...

Biggest disappointment for me after all the build up is the very sparing use of the live orchestra - heard at the end of A Reflection, Clue Two, and The Way He Looks At Me - but can't really remember prominent use of it apart from those instances. (1 listen mind, so I was taking so much in that I may have glossed over it somehow...).

Someone mentioned Consummate as a possible NIN live intro tape from now on - to me With Suspicion would be even better in that role, just builds brilliantly.

Heard this at 256 kb/s, awesome sound, bought some of the sampler tracks into their own I thought, where previously I thought they were slightly bland (especially Sugar Storm, there's so much else going on that I didn't initially spot)!

A couple of swarmatron-ny moments I thought in Like Home and Still Gone - welcome back my old friend!

Love the weird little noise that starts at 24 secs in Clue Two!!

Finally - gotta say I love Strange Activities - absolutely great little motif going on underneath all that noise! So unusual for this pair.

I look forward to many listens over the next few weeks/months/years, to hear all the bits I didn't get first time round!

Looking forward to seeing the film on the 7th and getting some context to all this stuff...
