You can't be fucking real right now

Every single living legend needs to spend the rest of 2016 in a well-guarded non-disclosed bunker. Prince was the greatest guitar alive in my mind and this is just fucking tragic. I rant with friends often about how perfect of a run of albums he had when he was young and that I considered them some of the best in music history and how we were lucky that he was still so young compared to so many other greats and now this happens. Iggy Pop needs a Secret Service detail assigned to him immediately.

At the very least Bowie was 69 and had lived an insanely full life of sound and vision. Prince was only 57. That's so young by any measure. Just, unbelievable. As someone who saw him in Orlando last year -- do it, he's amazing. Sounds clear as a bell, true showman, just a powerhouse. Put on a wonderful, wonderful show and it was a lovely evening all around. So worth the time. The crowd response to Crocodile Rock was just insane, you'd think it was still the 70's.

Honestly do it. Like I said, we're in that time when all the ones we grew up with are starting to go. I crossed off Bowie, Tom Waits, Prince, Elton, Billy Joel, Robert Plant....more than a few of those have legit been 'Gotta see 'em now, this might be it.' I went to Morrissey in the U.S. with that thought as like 90% of my motivation (without trying to sound like an ass). I mean, I wanted to...I'm a fan, but you're right. If you have a chance, go. Prince did a few shows here in Vancouver not too long ago and people actually moaned that he did more jam stuff than just busting out a greatest hits set. The entire time I was thinking 'I'm seeing some special shit right here.'

edit: ^^^ Your sister saw something spectacular. I've watched a few videos of his recent piano tour and it looked bonkers. Fuck.

I saw that on VH1 a long time ago. He wasn't saying a damn thing and Dick Clark asked how many instruments he could play and Prince just opened his hand and I was like "how many was that?" That's what made him so fuckin' cool. I also remember an old MTV2 promo that I can't find as it had a bunch of guys be Prince and the Revolution ala "When Doves Cry" where they sang "24 more ways to say I love you... oh-oooo" It was fucking hilarious. Aside from that Chappelle skit (which I just watched again and laughed my ass off) which I love is an old skit from In Living Color with Jamie Foxx as Prince. It still makes me laugh....

He was a pretty religious Jehovah's Witness, and he was a vegetarian and pretty health conscious. My husband is an ATC at the facility that worked Prince's plane when he had to make the emergency landing and word was that he was extremely dehydrated, unconscious, and had to be given IV fluids.

Prince also had a history of epilepsy (http://hollywoodlife.com/2016/04/21/prince-epilepsy-cause-death-neurological-disorder-flu-symptoms-severe/) which complicates the flu.

There's also a lot of HIV rumors. I would say the smartest thing is to not buy into any rumor right now until something's officially stated. It's really easy especially with someone as enigmatic as Prince to put together any sort of theory that can sound believable when there's nothing actually known.

Downtown Minneapolis is a huge party right now. People were leaving flowers outside of First Ave. this afternoon. Then it was announced that First Ave. got permission from the city to host an all-night dance party after Corey Taylor's concert there wrapped up. It turned into a massive block party with the streets around First Ave. blocked off.

People gathered at Paisley Park in Chanhassen to pay their respects. And the house that served as his family home in Purple Rain has a purple balloon out front.

The I-35W bridge is lit up in purple. So is the Lowry Ave. Bridge. The top of the Target building is purple along with the video board and media boards at Target Field. This is all just in Minneapolis. Worldwide, the Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, and Niagara Falls are among the gloabal landmarks that are glowing purple tonight.

Tomorrow is Purple for Prince Day. Everyone is being encouraged to wear purple.

I just got home after running around with friends for a while, and spent most of the night around first ave. So fucking cool and sad and beautiful.

We were gonna go over to Paisley Park but we heard it was all blocked off over there, so we just stayed downtown. Kinda wish we would have made it over there though. I heard at one point there was a rainbow over Paisley Park and everyone was like "Oh my god, it's Prince!!" lol

We drove through Uptown blasting "Uptown" out the windows. We went driving over the purple 35W while the "The Cross" was blasting at max volume. First Ave was pretty nuts. We saw Dem Atlas doing a cover of Let's Go Crazy. I saw this dude singing along to Conditions of the Heart with earplugs in and I swear that dude had the best voice ever, damn near broke my heart. I would have given anything to stay out there all night, but I have to work tomorrow and I have appointments and shit so I can't really call in sick. Supposedly they're gonna go till dawn.

It's a sad day for Minneapolis because, when it comes to pop culture, we really don't have much going for us. We've had some indie shit over the years, like The Replacements, Low, Atmosphere, etc, but nothing even remotely on Prince's god-like level. He was our only legend, really. It's not like in New York or LA, where they've had tons of superstars over the years. Prince was all we had, and now it feels like this place will never be same.

What about Bob Dylan since he is a Minnesotan?

Nah, it's just not the same. Dylan didn't give a shit about this place. He got out of here as soon as he could and never looked back, except for that time when he randomly decided to record half of Blood on the Tracks here. He mostly made his name out in New York. To me, it's always felt like a stretch to try and claim Dylan as "one of us."

Prince was totally different. This was his home. He built his whole Paisley Park empire here. A huge amount of the musicians and engineers he worked with over the years were local people. Throw a rock in this town and you're guaranteed to hit some former Prince collaborator, just because he had a tendency to burn through people so fast. Seems like everyone has a Prince story. To be honest, the stories are usually kinda negative, just because Prince was a bit of a fascist when it came to the people who worked for him. I've heard so many crazy stories about the shit that happens in Paisley Park. The dude definitely had mental issues.

But still, in spite of his somewhat infamous reputation around here, I think most people were quite proud to have him. I know I was. He was one of the only awesome things we had in this dreary city.

My first (and probably most played) Prince album was the 1989 Batman album. I was 9 and that movie was the coolest fucking thing i had ever seen. I just could not believe it. And of course, the soundtrack was a must have.

I thought of these lyrics from that album when i heard the news:

I'm drowning without you here, my dear
When I am lost and feeling alone
I just look to heaven
I find my comfort there
God only knows where you are to night
"God only knows where you are to night"
"Maybe time will tell me"
"'Till then I'll close my eyes and say a prayer for you"

I remember reading a Prince quote that really stuck with me about his mostly staying in the Minneapolis area; I can't find the direct quote but Prince said it gets so cold there, it keeps the bad people out.

I know he eventually rented a house in LA, too, but his HQ and home was always Minneapolis and he most certainly will always be associated with that city.

I remember when he had his "3121" release party in his house in L.A. and TR was there and pics were posted and we were all a combo of "TR sure looks uncomfortable at that shit" and "holy shit, Prince's LA pad is awesome." (Ends up the landlord was Carlos Boozer who sued him.)

elevenism, for the longest time, the Batman ride at Six Flags Great America just north of Chicago played Prince's Batman theme throughout the Gotham City area where you waited in line to board, definitely the most fun line of any amusement park ride. Not sure if it's still there, I think they have since modified it.

Dude, Prince had Al Sharpton's phone number and called him. Rev Sharpton has been stressing that Prince cared about people and causes other than himself, that Prince was concerned about civil rights etc, showing a side of Prince that most did not know existed but is really nice to know. I don't see this as reflecting negatively against Sharpton.

lol, if only that were true!

I've often wondered why he kept Minneapolis as his home when he could have settled down in any other place that would have been significantly more glamorous and exciting. I'm sure a huge part of it was just the fact that he was raised here. But I also wonder if he liked having a city all to himself. In LA, he'd have to share it with all the other legends. Minneapolis was his.

Double post as this (http://ca.complex.com/music/2016/04/fafu-prince-drum-programmer-mid-90s) is an amazing read from his drum programmer saying how Prince never made a mistake, and 'could play any instrument on the stage better than any of the band.' I got to this part and cracked up:

There was a rotating cast of sound men. He didn’t like it when the sound guy would tweak the mix while the band was performing; Prince could hear the mix change. The tour manager would try to bring in big-name engineers to mix his shows. I remember they brought in a guy who had just gotten off tour with Celine Dion, or someone like that, this guy who looked a bit like Darius Rucker, at the time when Hootie and the Blowfish were big. We’re doing a show at Paisley Park and halfway through, Prince says—over the PA—“Hootie, turn up my guitar.” Then, three quarters through, Prince says, “Hootie, you’re fired.”

Not trying to spread rumors, but it's being reported pretty far and wide now that his medical emergency a few nights ago on the plane was an overdose of Percocets. Not saying he didn't also have a crazy flu, but apparently influenza + Percocets is a nasty combo, obviously. Word was he was taking them to combat hip pain; I believe he had hip surgery back in like 2010 or something? Addictive shit...

That is a really weird comment though... If a sound guy changes the Front of House sound (the sound that you're hearing in the audience), the band can't really tell. And unless you've dialed it in and run through a full set with the sound guy, he's probably going to at least adjust a thing or two here and there.

The sound guy is going to dial in your monitor wedges (which give the majority of what the musicians on stage are hearing) during sound check, and when the band is happy, he leaves them alone (unless someone in the band indicates that they need to hear more or less of something in their monitor).

So, it's a funny story, but it doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, I heard about Michelle McNamara earlier tonight. I had only read a little bit of her work (through one of Patton's tweets) and had wanted to read more. It seemed interesting.

Patton is my comedy hero so this hit me a bit hard tonight. Whatever that means, because obviously I didn't know her and I don't know him personally but his comedy has always spoken to me on a personal level, more than any other comedian. I feel so awful for him and especially his daughter. I can't even imagine what it must be like to lose your mom at the age of 7.

In the middle of my depression, and the dreadful state of the music culture at that time it gave me hope, he was like a light in the darkness...
I went back to my hotel, and surrounded by empty beer cans, wrote Holy Mother....

Ends up the lawyers tried but Prince never bothered. This is REALLY COMMON. People either think (a) only old people die or (b) they're superstitious and are afraid they'll die if they do a Will or Trust. We've had clients who've spent hours and several appointments re a Will, then they never came in to SIGN it.

Now, per Minnesota law, Prince's sister, his 5 living half-siblings AND the children of his 2 deceased half-siblings are his heirs, in equal shares.

I've seen several of this young man's movies (beside s Star Trek). He was very talented and had such a great career ahead of him.

If the Holocaust had never happened, my Jewish ancestors would've never come to America and I wouldn't exist. I've always had a connection to the subject and from a very early age was instilled with a sense of its importance; it's always been a heavy subject for me that I've felt somewhat obligated to be aware of (I think everyone has a responsibility to know about these things and never forget them). His book Night was, for me as a young person when I first read it, an extremely impacting read, and I know I'm one of many who had that experience with it.

People like him were excellent reminders that no one can completely take the life or love out of others through hate and bigotry and he was an extremely important figure for the Jewish community. I find it extremely moving that he lived to 87 after spending his childhood in a society that was committed to guaranteeing he'd never make it past adolescence, and that he was able to spent all of the extra time defiantly spreading education, understanding and insight throughout the world.

This year needs to just stop it.

I'm going to watch The Wicker Man again now... Still maybe the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I walked away from it the first time really shaken up, and it's maybe the only movie that even though I thought it was great, I have a hard time watching again. There's something so terrible about the ending. The way he screams, the terror he expresses at the revelation... it's all too real. The mindless fanaticism of the true believer is capable of delivering the most horrifying and meaningless ends. Such a great film. RIP.

What awful news. This one hits especially hard for me ... like a lot of kids, Willy Wonka was such a facet of my childhood. Nothing ever came as close to being magic incarnate to me as Gene in that movie did. By all accounts he was such a sweet, loving man.

It's not just Willy Wonka that I will fondly remember him for. It's also for his work in Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and the films he did with Richard Pryor as they were just gold together. I kind of have a soft spot for The Woman in Red as he was so funny in that yet one of my all-time favorite performances from him is in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask) as his segment alone was the best thing in that film. All because he falls in love with a goat.

wtf? look @Ryan (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=67) . The Grim Law in action, once again ;)
Zipf's law (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zipf%27s_law) is not a conspiracy theory, lol.
It's a linguistic power law probability distribution that i came across and found interesting, where a word's frequency of appearance in literature is inversely proportional to its rank of commonality in a certain and precise way. In other words, THE is the most common word, the second word appears 1/2 as frequently as the first, the third word appears 1/3 as frequently as the first and so on.
It's not some grammarian conspiracy...THAT I KNOW OF! DUM DUM DUM! ;)
And i think it's in the "little things that cheer you up" thread (for fuck's sake) because i thought it was cool.

Also, A WHOLE HELL OF A LOT OF US related to and were moved by the personages we are discussing here. If i am to understand this thread correctly, it's why we are discussing them.

Edit: and, goddamn, how are you so sure mel brooks is going to be dead soon. He could live another 10 years.
