Fuck 2017. Tom Petty is a national treasure. An institution of rock n' roll that was always there. Now, there's a big void that won't be filled. I grew up on Tom Petty as I'm sure a lot of us did. Plus, I'm sure everyone here and their sibling has that Greatest Hits album. So many great songs that are staples of radio. Thank you Tom. We will miss you.

Scott Putesky, better known as Daisy Berkowitz—guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of Marilyn Manson (https://pitchfork.com/artists/7780-marilyn-manson/)—has died following a battle with colon cancer. He was 49. In a statement on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bak7juxh3ax/), Marilyn Manson writes, “Scott Putesky and I made great music together. We had our differences over the years, but I will always remember the good times more.” Putesky left Manson’s band in 1996 during the recording of Antichrist Superstar. He went on to release music under the name Three Ton Gate and also played guitar in the band Jack Off Jill (https://www.facebook.com/Jack.Off.Jill.band/).

I need to read Vincent Bugliosi's book but iirc, Manson didn't want to go to jail since he already has had a taste of it in his youth. The majority of his life was spent in jail.

Usually, went someone dies, the world is lessen because of it. In Manson's case, the world is now a much MUCH better place.

I just came to post this. I didn't know if anyone here cared... Vancouver is where I live, where both these bands were based out of, and I am 34, same age as him. This is a little too close to home. I saw both of these bands on numerous occasions over the years here. This was very shocking... Life is way too short, it's kinda scary...

I had to correct my post because i mistakenly called them Last Spine Down instead of Left Spine Down. Freudian slip perhaps.

Yeah i was fortunate to see him perform with LSD a few times when i lived in Alberta and i got to meet him too! It's so totally out of nowhere that this happened, i didn't know he had such an ailment and that it become that bad. Truly awful!

^ huge bummer. i've gone through several Fall obsessions over the years, though I haven't really listened to them much in recent years. fond memories of seeing The Fall in 2005 in NYC, waiting hours for them to come on stage with no openers, playing mostly new music for 50 minutes. On the final encore song, "New Big Prinz," Mark tossed the mic into the crowd and me and this other huge fan took turns singing the lyrics...

RIP Mark, thanks for everything.

Urgh this one hurts...been listening to The Fall for years, Mark E Smith was so one of a kind, he never stopped gigging or releasing music ever in 40 years, was always active. 35 albums. Such a big discography. So influential.
Saw the Fall live a few times last time was in 2006, been meaning to see them again. Fuck.

I would go on binges with his music about once a year for a few weeks. Loved listening to the more obscure albums.
Its not exactly suprising news, considering how much he drank im amazed he made it to 60 lol.
I knew he had been unwell recently, he had been in a wheelchair and totally incoherent at gigs in past year.
But yeah going to go on another fall binge this week probably.

Mark E Smith is a shock, G and I were shocked to discover that he was only 60, he looked far older and really feeble. As said, he’d been reported to be ill but nobody knew why.

We saw The Fall a few times, and one show is on our Top Five shows of All Time, at the Metro in Chicago, I think in around 2005, they didn’t go on stage until around 1 am, then Mark sat at a long conference table all night with various mics, holding them up in various directions, and sometimes getting up and walking around, but it was all TIGHT and MEZMERIZING and INTENSE and unforgettable.

RIP, Mark. You are a legend.

I was *literally* just thinking about that as I listened to the last episode the other day. I started with "I wonder why they stopped offering his voice as the prize" and then, sadly, my mind did drift to "I hope he's just enjoying a relaxing retirement". But then I started thinking about how little effort it takes to record a greeting, and my mind went down a darker path. Sad to see that theory confirmed. With all due respect to Bill Kurtis, there was just something special about WWDTM when Carl was the host.

I don’t have anything different to say that hasn’t already been said. Mental illness is a monster that our country largely dismisses and underfunds. This is just so, so sad. The man lived the life that many, many people wished they could live, and he still wasn't happy, b/c he couldn't get happy. And his friend...poor Eric Ripert. edit:

the editor of our local paper posted this "news" online today. SIX MONTHS LATE.

Normally I check bylines and whatnot, but when it's the goddamn editor of the paper and ALL he posts is current events...well, I make assumptions.

I heard some whispering that that shit is WHY he got killed; that it was like a vengeance thing.
I kind of hope that is the case because it would at least make sense.

That being said, you guys better be careful speaking ill of the dead so soon. You're gonna wind up with the ghost of that motherfucker in your room at 3am, mumble rapping while he sodomizes you with that barbecue fork.

One thing I admired about Vinnie Paul, I don't know if this was his idea or not, but his drums cut through the mix and were up front sort of like some old industrial music. Lars did it on AJFA but he took it to another level. It somehow made it sound even heavier.

https://imgur.com/a/BxTtHFZPeople fucked with me in middle school. Instead of crying about it, I came home and listened to Vulgar Display of Power. This was in 92 or 93.
Now I was into metallica and megadeth, but Pantera was just SO much harder.
It helped me through a lot of shit. I'm not really a metalhead: for me, most of the "hard stuff" is heavy drum and bass ( the genre, not the instruments.)

But pantera. Good god. They're just IT.

And again, at the risk of sounding elitist, it honestly WAS/is incredibly special that they came from D F Dub.

We've got Ride for Dime every year. We've got fucking murals of Dime in Deep Ellum (you probably aren't aware of deep ellum if you aren't from texas.)

When Dime died and people gathered, the COPS played pantera through the PA on their police cars.

And a WHOLE lot of us ran into those guys, at local shows or at the Clubhouse.

I know that everyone loves pantera, but they were OURS in a way, like Rush in toronto or Hova in Brooklyn.

I'm not trying to take away from anyone else's grief.
I'm just saying that, if you came up in DFW (or anywhere near it,) I think it's more like losing someone you know.

Never really understood the hate for Hellyeah. They’re definitely not great, but they get lumped into “shitty metal” for reasons I’ve never understood. Oh well.

Cowboys From Hell opened up the Golic and Wingo show this morning on ESPN radio. They didn’t mention Vinnies death but I’m sure there are many fans there. Not sure if the Dallas Stars have paid their respects yet as the NHL draft was this weekend.

Stefán Karl Stefánsson, actor, has passed away at the age of 43 after a 2 year battle with cancer.
Stefán is leaving behind a wife and four children.

Stefán was most likely the Icelandic actor most people on earth recognized, and still do. Millions of people all around the world grew up watching, and shouting constantly at him through the television, letting him know that his newest disguise has been foiled as Robbie Rotten.

Stefán Karl started his acting career at the acting association of Hafnafjörður when he was only 13 years old. He was born in Hafnafjörður in the year 1975, although he had family in other places of the country, which he would visit when given the opportunity. He enjoyed few things as much as he enjoyed driving through whalebay (Hvalfjörð, a bay just outside Mosfellsbær) with his father, whom worked close by. He would go down to the docks and watch the dockers going about their business, thus receiving the short-lived nickname : "Stebbi bryggjurotta" (Stebbi dockrat).

As a child Stefán lived close by a cemetery and later admitted that in his younger years, he had been terrified of ghosts and ghouls. He talked about how he would sneak out into his garden in the night and throw rocks at an iron garbage can. When the noise filled the air he became terrified at first and ran for his dear life. After repeating the process he finally started braving the night, Stefán mentions that by repeating the process he "scared away his fear of the dark".He bounced back twice previously so this is a sad turn of events.
