Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!

HBO IS DEVELOPING A SPHERE SERIES!
Yes, the Michael Crichton book! Seriously, one of my favorite books ever. When Westworld was announced, I said to my girl how it would be cool if Sphere was expanded into a mini series as there is a lot there that could be developed further. This is so awesome!!!

Westworld’s Denise Thé developing Sphere series at HBO

After acting as executive producer and writer on the premium cabler’s other major Michael Crichton adaptation, Westworld‘s Denise Thé is developing a series adaptation of the author’s 1987 novel Sphere for HBO.

With Thé at the helm as showrunner, writer and executive producer, the series will adapt the story of a group of scientists as they head one thousand feet below into the ocean and confront the surreal, beautiful and deadly mysteries of the universe, only to find those closest to us may also be the most alien.

The new adaptation will be produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Film alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey in association with Warner Bros. Television, while Nolan, Joy, the Downeys, Athena Wickham and Amanda Burrell are attached as executive producers.

i loved that movie so much when i saw it in the theater that, as soon as it let out, i walked across to barnes & noble and bought the book. while the movie changed quite a few things from the book, it's still pretty good, but i'm SUPER excited to see what they do with a series. i think it'd be way better to spread everything out and give it room to breathe.

I have two thoughts on this. the first is yay, of course, because she's back. but the second is that it'll try too hard to be the "new" horror and also try to skewer it at the same time. I hope they can thread that needle.

that trailer gave away a lot more than the previous two and it's got a little Ready Player One in there as well. I like the premise but they keep showing too much Happy Guy "oh hai look at me being a Mary Sue" like when he's driving.

and yeah, very much a WIR thing with him trying to save everyone at the end.

This is stupid. She's too old to portray a 10 years younger version of the same character? She's only 45 and still looks amazing.
Nothing against the new actress though. I liked her in Peaky Blinders.

Agreed. Bad move IMO but it is what it is I guess. Even more so in that Theron reportedly really wanted to do it.

I was this close to writing almost exactly the same comment yesterday, but something stopped me. Apparently I'm not the only one who thought the same. There were some similar huge flying creatures in the last RE film.

Haysey_Draws
10-15-2020, 05:03 AM
To be fair i have been saying this since the film was announced, but it really REALLY does look shockingly similar ...and i get it's an easy "it's the same director and actor" but i'm not exactly sure this is what Monster Hunter fans were expecting. Like the 2 franchises aren't even remotely the same, i think most just wanted a fun fantasy adventure of hunter monsters in weird and wonderful locations, not a resident evil spinoff army advert.

I might be being harsh, it could be fun...i'm just not sold on this trailer. Also this is the first trailer 2 months before it's out...that doesn't fill me with confidence for some reason.

dlb
10-15-2020, 11:31 AM
The trailer looks way better than I expected, especially the monster effects, but only knowing a little bit about the games, this isn't what it should look like, is it? Shouldn't it be more bright, magical and outerwordly? I suppose it's best if people would keep these game adaptations in a more Manga/Anime realm where they can really go full out there. :/

Yeah that's my main concer as well, what are they planning to do with everyone that doesn't have the chance to get HBO Max around the globe? And I fully agree, especially these kind of movies need to be experienced in a cinema with proper soundsystems.

I've been to the movies five times this year and I'm missing that even a bit more than concerts. So I really hope we will get the chance to see these movies they way we would enoy them the most.

Yes, some films amaze not so much with the content, so much with the visual component. And there is simply no point in watching such films at home, because the content will not interest you, and you want to see the special effects in detail, which many home screens cannot convey. No, if you have a 55-60-inch TV, that's a different story.

Haysey_Draws
12-08-2020, 03:47 AM
I wish i could afford a 90 inch TV, let alone had space for it!

Looks like Legendary are considering legal action against WB for Dune and Godzilla for putting them straight to streaming, i'd imagine WB's are screwing them out of protentional box office takings and taking advantage by propping up their streaming service which doesn't help Legendary at all. Hopefully by the time they are out cinemas will be open here and the vaccine will be out to most of the UK, so not having HBO Max here won't be an issue, but this could be a massive issue in the US...speaking of UK cinemas ...

Wonder Woman is coming to cinemas in the UK on dec 16th, yay...and it looks like London will be tier 3 (worst tier) by then because the gov doesn't know what it's doing so i won't be able to see it...FFS!

Me, my wife and a few of our friends watch Jersey Shore (I regret nothing) & The Challenge. We regularly complain about how they never repeat the episodes (forcing one to watch on demand with maximum, un-fast forwardable commercials), yet they fill up the vast majority of their programming week with Ridiculousness. I get why they play it so much, but you can't spare an hour here or there in the middle of the night to replay two very popular shows that are actual original, quality, high production value (well at least the Challenge is) shows?

Can ANYONE make it?

The only SK movies I've truly liked were made from novellas: Secret Window, The Body/Stand by Me, (Rita Hayworth and) The Shawshank Redemption. Oh, yeah. There was ONE novel they nailed, and that was The Green Mile.

But, dude, The Territories? Lighting out for the Territories? I just...I feel like that shit can only exist in your MIND, much like Mid World and Todash and such. I honestly feel like the best of King is just not adaptable.

Since it's based on real events and it's part of the synopsis of the movie, I don't think it's too spoiler-ish to say that he plays Maurizio Gucci, she plays his wife Patrizia; he gets killed and she goes on trial.

I actually remember when it happened.

HOLY SHIT! Stabler and Benson together again! I LOVED SVU most of all with Christopher Meloni, and have been FAR less invested since he left. I've been HOPING this would happen someday, but never thought it would. I think it's a backdoor pilot for Meloni's new Wolf Dick show, Law and Order: Organized Crime. It'll probably be an episode of SVU with stabler, followed by the premiere of the new show. Liv, Finn, and Amanda are all set to appear in the new show at least ONCE.

Yeah, I've been all over this since the beginning of the year. Crossover episodes this Thursday, starting with SVU and continuing into the premiere of Organized Crime.

I've been missing Stabler too but I've always felt that the best partners on SVU were Fin and Munch. Don't tell me you missed the Raphael Barba years? He was the best ADA they ever had!

Did you know that many of Wolf's show are in a shared universe? Especially SVU and the Chicago 3: Fire, PD and Med. God I love those shows.

Also, I've seen most all of SVU. It just stopped becoming "must see tv" for me when Stabler left. And then Kragen and Munch, too: ouch!
And i know about the shared universe. I like procedurals, but my wife LOVES them. I especially love the way Chicago PD came out of Chicago Fire. I LOVE Voight. I don't get into the med, so much.
But, yeah: Dick Wolf is a genius. My favorite is the Vincent D'Onoffrio/Kathryn Erbe era of Criminal Intent. Goren is my favorite character, with stabler being a close second, although Voight is growing on me.
@marodi (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=125) , I wonder if "Organized" is going to follow the longer story arc formula of the Chicago shows. I mean, surely they won't be solving an "organized crimes" in each episode.

Any predictions for Stabler? I bet he comes back because someone in his family is killed or hurt by a criminal organization

Robert Goren is legend, my friend. Legend! Out of the Chicago 3, my favorite is Herrmann from Fire. He can be so goofy and do stupid stuff but he's such an amazing friend and father figure to every other character. I just love him.

I agree someone from Stabler's family is going to get killed. My bet is on his eldest daughter, since she had a propentisity to get into trouble when she was a teenager. Whatever it is, Stabler may be a very bitter man now. I would love to see Voight and him get into an investigation together.

Can't wait for Thursday!

nope, they're making their own platform for it (that you get access to by being a backer, as far as i understand it).

also, campaign is already almost halfway funded and it launched less than three hours ago. wish you didn't have to go all the way up to $250 just to get the blu-ray set. the previous campaigns unlocked it at like $150 i think? and you got more stuff, too. but i guess that's the difference when netflix isn't at least co-funding the project. will probably go for the $100 tier.

Super Mario Bros: The Morton Jankel Cut (VHS Extended Rough Cut 1.0) Movie 1993

From the official Super Mario Bros: The Movie Archive team, here's your first look at the previously-unseen extended rough cut of the controversial 1993 cyberpunk fantasy, Super Mario Bros.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-4yy9oBKN4

The film as released runs 104 minutes. This extended version runs a full 125 minutes, with 20 minutes of additional scenes. The editing has also been reworked throughout, and restored by filmmaker Garrett Gilchrist, well known for his restoration of The Thief and the Cobbler and many Muppet projects.

Growing up is a beast. Check out the new trailer for the upcoming all-new original feature film “Turning Red” from Pixar Animation Studios’ director Domee Shi, who won an Oscar® for her 2018 short film, “Bao.” Young actress Rosalie Chiang lends her voice to Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS). Sandra Oh voices Mei Lee’s protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, who is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. Directed by Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” releases March 11, 2022.

Laika Announces Sixth Stop-Motion Movie, ‘Wildwood,’ Directed by Travis Knight, Shot by Caleb Deschanel (https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/laika-announces-sixth-stop-motion-movie-e2-80-98wildwood-e2-80-99-directed-by-travis-knight-shot-by-caleb-deschanel/ar-AAOtsd0?ocid=uxbndlbing)

“Wildwood” is based on the first in a trilogy of YA fantasy novels by Colin Meloy, lead singer and songwriter for Portland-based The Decemberists, and illustrated by artist Carson Ellis.I mean I guess it's nice she's recognized for being an artist but wouldn't you have also said "wife of"?
“Beyond Portland’s city limits lies Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she — along with her hapless classmate Curtis — is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairy tales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one…filled with strange talking animals, roguish bandits, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.”I read this with my son a few years ago, it's pretty good. Has some pacing issues for a children's book - not every book should be ~3" thick - but has a lot of interesting world building.

It's by Sean Baker, the dude who did Tangerine and Florida Project.

To me, Sean Baker is like Harmony Korine, if Harmony Korine made movies that were actually good and not terrible, like they are.

I'm sure by the end of my viewing I'll have some partiality to the OG show before the reboot comes along but I hope to give it a chance, it's a good sign that the creator is involved again but with it being on the CW it's hard to say what it's going to look like.

Will it be skewing younger than the OG series? Younger actors etc.? I would hope it keeps a more mature target audience but that's not usually how CW operates.

I guess we'll see!

I've been trying to see Licorice Pizza since it came out but just haven't been able to get to the theater, and now there are a bunch of other movies playing I want to see in the theater as well. I figure Licorice Pizza has been out for a while now, so I would expect it to be available to rent pretty soon, but I can't find any dates. I'm assuming the Oscar nominations will probably keep it in theaters a little longer.

It's going to vary from studio-to-studio (and everything is in-flux at the moment), but it's typically been 15–70 days during 2020–2022. Some major studios have adopted a 45 day theater-exclusive, as it does seem to strike a happy medium. I don't know about you, but 6 months+ was a little excessive.

More direct to Licorice Pizza, it should (hopefully) be available VOD the first week of March. This Wal-Mart link (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Licorice-Pizza-Blu-ray-DVD-Digital-Copy/649435420) seems to confirm the rumor that the BD/DVD is coming March 15 (there's no release date but look at when it says you can recieve it by), and streaming is usually 2 weeks before that.

If we look at something like Drive My Car, which was released theatrically around the same time, that will be coming to HBO Max on March 2nd. I know Licorice Pizza is MGM/Amazon, but it seems like a fair comparison.

Not that anyone cares but here are my 2 cents:

That was a very low joke. Joking about someone's disability, that's low in my book. But freedom of speech blah blah blah. And maybe Rock's mini monologue was improvised and he made that distasteful joke in the heat of the moment.

I feel for Smith, I really do. This was his night; the biggest achievement of his career... and this happens. Nothing justify putting his hands on someone else. That's the law. He is in the wrong. And it was heartbreaking to watch him speak but... he's the wrong one. If Will hadn't punched him, Chris would still have look like an ass.

Where's the nekkid guy running across the stage when you need him?

Oh hey, my man Denis Villeneuve's Dune won 6 Oscars!

He literally laughed at the joke. He's just as guilty as Chris

All the people who are "Team Will" at this point are ridiculous. The joke was shit, and Chris Rock should have totally been called out about it later on, but that moment was all about Will and his ego. It wasn't about Jada or standing up for women. He did it for himself.

Sorry, but Will looked like an idiot tonight. Horrible to see physical abuse gets rewarded like that.

Well, fuck it, my 2 cents....

First off, jokes are jokes. You gotta be able to laugh at your appearance. Look, I know its obviously harder for women because it's more rare. But all this about her having a disability? She's going bald. When a dude goes bald its always fodder for a punchline but now when its a rich, famous, attractive, talented hollywood star that happens to be a woman it's a disability now? Fuck that. She's bald, that's it. You can see her scalp. Whoopty fuckin do. It's an insult to people who have real disabilities.

Secondly, fuck Will Smith for standing up there acting indignant and talking about shining a fucking light in the world right after making one of the most blatant public assault displays probably ever. You don't get to sit there and act self righteous like you're some kind of shining light to the world after some shit like that. And shame on the oscars for not having him removed from the venue immediately. A regular person pulls some shit like that at an office party? They get fired.

If he would have stood up and used his words (ie, brain) to call out Rock then I don't think there would be a problem. Small minds resort to shit like that. And to make it even worse he didn't even approach Chris Rock like a man. He faked like he was up to some joke and bitch smacked him.

Lastly, everyone should recognize just how much of a fucking professional Chris Rock was in that moment. He kept the show going and the oscars should have to publicly apologize to him and they should be thanking him for his professional reaction. He got smacked in the face without warning and in less than a second he was laughing his ass off and making a joke about it being the best moment in television history while little willy went back to his seat to cry. And considering the fact Will Smith is about twice the size of Rock I think its funny he took that slap on the chin like it was nothing at all. Shit, I'd have probably fallen right over and I'm nowhere near as small as Rock.
