Some streamer said the music in a video game sounds like Nine Inch Nails and then looks up up the meaning of the name:

I really hope there's some new NIN this year.

Back in 2008 when I became disabled, I did a lot of MRIs and was told that it was loud and not a good noise... I said I listened to industrial music (and specifically mentioned NIN since at least a lot of people have heard of them). Yeah, it was fine.

New podcast interview with Carré Callaway from Queen Kwong that mentions her early experience opening for NIN in 2005 (it did not go well) and about her life with a CF diagnosis. Really great to hear she's doing well and recording another record! https://thebonnellfoundation.org/queen-kwong-aka-carre-callaway-rock-and-roll-and-cf/

Plans can change. Maybe they got offered a scoring job that conflicted. Maybe they're actually working on new NIN. Maybe they just decided not to tour. TR has stated that 2022 was the end of the CBI tour and stage production. In my opinion, it doesn't really make sense for them to tour and create a new stage show until there is new music. As much as I enjoy NIN touring, I'd rather hear new music and not see them become a live act that just plays the old stuff. Given TR's statements to not tour as much, I don't see that happening anyway.

that trailer has been out since forever (I think I first saw it in theater before TNMT in August) and I think general consensus is that it's a generic trailer orchestrated cover (like they do for all songs now) but it uses TR's vocals from NIN studio version.

I'm sure most people know this stuff, but for context, Hideo Kojima is a video game designer, most famously of the Metal Gear Solid series. At the recent video game awards, he walked on stage to Came Back Haunted. Since then people have been speculating that TRAR will score his next game.

EDIT: he just added this on Twitter:

Unusually for Gallagher I think, based on the context, he's being positive. As in, I'm not singing to the level Reznor did. Full quote:

He puts out AATCHB in 5.1, I get a goddamn surround sound system. He puts out BYIT on Blu Ray, I get an HDTV. I have not seen this before, what's it from? I don't like it when they dangle a surround Fragile, just do it.

Also if they do the Blu-Rays you should 100% get on that shit because those are limited run because of manufacturing lines. I wish more of the Atmos mixes were available via physical media so I don't have to subscribe to anything.

It can be. One of the many Atmos releases is an album I've heard several hundred times since release and you could definitely hear a difference.

That said, I have not found that the classical/score Atmos releases sound all that different. There are too many instruments for there to be a definite change. Like some Atmos songs you can hear the two guitars very clearly, one on the right rear and one on the left rear, but the multitude of strings and instruments it's more like "I guess I'm 4th chair viola for this performance".

of note: the version of TDTWWA from Still is from the CRC session in 2000.
It's based on that exact same arrangement (Danny and Robin on acoustic bass and guitar, Jerome on the 'junk' kit, TR on piano), but I believe for Still they re-recorded it, slightly more confidently, a few nights later... there was a Fragility 2.0-era NIN.com post that showed a backstage/dressing room-type recording setup, with Keith Hillebrandt visible and presumably manning the synth introduction. The Still version of "Something I Can Never Have" is patterned on this setup, as well (although they did it later, back at home in NOLA, with Jerome on acoustic guitar and different synths).

It sounds like Trent wasn't as committed to the idea of reinventing things as Adrian was. Maybe it was one of those ideas that seemed good on paper, but once they started working on it, it started to fall apart. That's really a shame that he had to go through that and get kicked out of King Crimson as well.

Very interesting to hear that side of things. I'd be interested to hear what Eric Avery thinks about it, since it seems he was in the same boat. The only thing I've seen was a quote from the news reports of his leaving, basically saying he just didn't want to be on the road for another year and wanted to focus on his own music.

Maybe Trent's version of reinventing things and Adrian's were a bit too different. I'm surprised to hear that, at least from Adrian's telling, Trent kinda blamed the rest of the band for the whole thing. That part seems off to me, and maybe that's just his mind remembering it differently ten years later. It's weird to think that Trent would prioritize the opinions of the rest of the band over his own, so I have to think that Trent wasn't happy with the way things were going either.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H678YcwCl4

This always fascinated me. I rememebr in 2013 Trent saying that Nine Inch Nails was "reinventing itself from scratch", so I think there was an idea of how to reinterpret the material but it just didn't click or come together. I know a lot of guitar guys like this in my personal life, they're good players ... but they seem to be in their own world when it comes to 'jamming' and it's hard to get structure out of them. Adrian is incredible, but comments like "L.A. players" just come across obnoxious.

In the end, I think whatever they may have been planning would have been perfect for a club run of shows where it's a new vibe ... but in 2013, they were playing major festivals and about to embark on a stadium tour, so potentially trying things a bit new just didn't feel right at the time.

Trent even made the comment on Discord two years ago that the latest version of the band was done, so who knows what could be next.

jmtd
02-09-2024, 12:58 PM
There was a fair bit of reinvention since 2013. All the EP material is obviously new, but also, the perfect drug, sanctified rework, terrible lie with more prominent bass bit; iirc doing the LP version of TDTWWA was from after that

cdm
02-09-2024, 02:01 PM
I mean there was considerable reinvention within 2013 itself...the Belew rehearsals were before the summer festival run of that tour, with Tension (a wild departure from previous tour cycles) starting a few weeks after the fest run concluded. Something seems off about this new retelling of events but at this point I couldn't care less.

Passing resemblance, but that cover is itself an adaptation of the poster for his 998th/999th/1000th gigs, which to my eyes (except for it not being a square, and the red text at bottom) is even closer to the NIN design: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=870468181114922&set=a.265010738327339

Trademark protections are only good for the jurisdiction in which they're registered. But, it turns out, Trent actually has a European Union Trademark registration for the NIN logo:
https://euipo.europa.eu/eSearch/#details/trademarks/007523723

Greece is beholden to that, so there would be a legal basis if he wanted to pursue that.

Generally speaking, big-ish organizations really don't care if some tiny company is using their stuff. Yes, some are more litigious than others, especially the huge companies, but there's a good chance the NIN camp saw it, had a chuckle, and moved on. If they opened a chain, went viral, etc., then it would be a different story.

It looks like it could be Ross Shaw (https://www.instagram.com/jmgstudioross/?hl=en) of JMG Studio (https://www.jmgstudio.co.uk/). The text says:

That's honestly what I'm hoping for this year. The instrumental "new" tracks from the Fragile version of Deviations were so much fun to listen to and experience that era, so I'd be really interested to see what left over material was around from TDS era. Don't think there's as much as The Fragile, but still.

Since I doubt we'll be getting new material any time soon, this could at least hold me over until then. With vinyl prices soaring, I wonder how much Trent is invested in putting out those Deluxe Versions of albums we're still waiting on (I.E. The Slip)

I'm disappointed that this has been known in guitar circles for over a decade, and somehow it never crossed my desk. At the same time, it looks like the going rate for one of these bad boys has been $3500, and I don't need a $3500 guitar, so I'm not that disappointed. Pretty wild that negotiations went far enough to have 50(ish?) prototype units manufactured.

If it's gotten to 50, it's past the prototype stage and onto production. Limited artist models are often limited to that few, or even fewer. Clearly things fell apart pretty late in the process.

What I've learned reading old interviews is to be successful is to be constantly on media's lips. Courtney Love was an expert at it, and it's how she was so successful in the industry, appearing at every event and pre-planning everything about her life. Remember "three inch nails", yeah, that was her creating buzz that she somehow slept with TR, positive or negative buzz. False narrative is still narrative, even if they were just friends.

It still holds true, but the mysticism is not blurry anymore with everything captured in social media.

That said, the fact that Mudstock was planned is so damn cool! There were dozens of artists there, and TR had the smarts to know that to win the audience is to be the audience.

It's so cool to see all this footage that she is uploading, such an intimate peak behind the curtain of such an important moment for the band. Finding out that the mud was planned, not just something happening on a whim, shows just how smart Trent was about this performance. He knew how to steal the spotlight from the other bands playing, and it certainly worked. Fast forward 30 years, NIN's performance is still one of the most iconic moments of the festival.

I still frequently seek out information about old school Nothing Records stuff, and I found an old zine (https://www.slugmag.com/pdf/40-April-1992.pdf) from '92 that mentions an unreleased Trent Reznor remix. Page 21 of the pdf has a section about the Warner Distribution deal for 4AD, and claims that the reissue of Queer from The Wolfgang Press was going to have a Reznor remix of their song "Kansas." On the one hand, that song is on Bird Wood Cage, so the information is a little dubious. On the other hand, I've seen other sources that reference Reznor remixing TWP, and there definitely was some connection (Object Merch had a deal with TWP at one point.) If there was anything that he worked on, I'd love to hear it (along with a Goldie remix of The Perfect Drug, and a Timbaland remix of The Hand That Feeds, just for fun).

There are mentions on USENET of a TWP remix as early as 1993:
https://groups.google.com/g/rec.music.industrial/c/F9w4xnpiK4A/m/7z7q8qzq-mMJ

There's research here (https://www.tumblr.com/mqhanlon-blog/52506511005/nothing-records-part-vii-what-didnt-happen) that says "A 1995 issue of Musician Magazine includes TWP in a list of bands that Reznor has remixed." Also, "in 1995, guitarist Andrew Gray casually mentioned spending time at the Sharon Tate house and having "connections with Reznor." The Tate mansion was only used from 1992-1993., so a visit then would line up with the SLUG magazine timeline of doing the remix.

Here's another article that mentions a TWP remix: http://www.nin-pages.de/1995_Goldmine_August_english.htm

It's reported enough in the press that it seems like something probably happened, but it remains unreleased.

Hey, look! It's my old Tumblr. Good thinking on connecting the timeline. I hadn't thought that part through. One more piece of evidence I've seen connecting The Wolfgang Press with Nothing was a mention in the 4AD book, Facing the Other Way. Just a brief note that Trent had tried to get John Malm to be their manager, but they didn't think it would work to have a stateside manager. Clearly there was contact; hopefully someone releases the remix someday.

Presumably a single for an upcoming album! That font is weirdly death metal, though. :D

New review of the Justin Timberlake album on Pitchfork:

The electro-funk-leaning Calvin Harris (https://pitchfork.com/artists/5504-calvin-harris/) co-production “Fuckin’ Up the Disco” is a highlight, even if the lyrics evoke an overserved IT technician at a conference wrap party. “You the password, I’ma hit reset,” he speak-sings, in a song that also invites its subject to “run your nine-inch nails all over my back.” I’ll resist a gag about Timberlake’s own downward spiral, because Everything I Thought It Was is less of a faceplant than a comfortable rehash of past glories that has nothing to do with putting a fresh spin on his signature sound(s) and everything to do with cautiously course-correcting ahead of an extensive world tour.

That was good. I didn't realize that Rach was with them for, like, 2.5 years. Basically, doing the type of tour photography and filming that Rob did on the later tours.

The things I found interesting: the more details about how the Simon Maxwell professional film was setup and later scrapped, and then Rach's footage selected instead. Apparently, several whole gigs of the Club Tour in 1995 were filmed by Rach. Graphic detail of Robin's finger injury.

I'm still dreaming of footage or recordings of the 1995 Club Tour showing up. They have to be out there, it's only a matter of time. I want to hear it I guess from a... historical point of view? I'm struggling to find the right words. Basically with the exception of the Night of Nothing shows a year later it's the end of the TDS era and I'm curious as hell and its wild to me a bad as high profile TDS era NIN has no recordings even if they were small short notice club shows - one of the warm up shows from early 1994 surfaced 20 years later (https://ninlive.com/shows/1994/19940318.html - not a great recording but still!) maybe there's hope for this leg too.

I was recently rereading Trent's old posts from Prodigy boards from 1992-93, and interestingly, TR said they're doing "probably" two songs for The Crow, one of which is Joy Division cover. I wonder what happened to the other one and if it was gonna be an original, or just something from TDS.

12 great original film scores from rock musicians who became composers (avclub.com) (https://www.avclub.com/best-film-scores-rock-musicians-1851439236/slides/6)

Reznor and Ross’ new score for Challengers may be one of their best so far, but they still have yet to surpass the success of their very first collaboration together. The Social Network score remains an all-timer. Before David Fincher asked Reznor to work on the Mark Zuckerberg biopic, the former Nine Inch Nails frontman had produced soundtracks and tried his hand at scoring solo. But it wasn’t until he teamed up with Ross that things really clicked (they’ve now scored five films together for Fincher). Their haunting melodies and pulsating, electronic beats are perfectly suited to the story of a driven entrepreneur whose personality defects overshadowed his meteoric success. That push and pull is what makes it so effective, and contributed to the team winning the first of their two Oscars for Best Original Score (the second was for Soul).

They stated at the beginning that they were focusing on people who were mainly rock musicians for the majority of their careers, then did film scores. Obviously those guys were in bands before they became film composers, but with the exception of Danny Elfman, they are primarily known as composers first. I know when I think of Martinez or Mansell, I think of their scores first and their band contributions second.

I've scanned through the first episode. About halfway through, there is a 4-minute segment devoted to the Phoenix, AZ meltdown. It has all the MTV News footage that we've seen before, but there is a brief glimpse of Trent losing his shit backstage. There's also new, contemporary comments and recollections by Trent about what happened that day.

Then, about 3/4 of the way through the episode, there's about a minute of new NIN footage from Chicago with Trent humping a keyboard. Everyone's talking about how NIN is blowing everyone away, with some more recollections from modern-day Trent.

Maybe I should have specified, he covered the Johnny Cash version of the song, since he used crown of thorns in the lyrics.
Well, nerd time but Pearl Jam only exists because Mother Love Bone imploded after Andy Wood's (the singer) death. Two members of that band - Stone and Jeff - went on to form Pearl Jam. Around the 2000 tour the band started playing Crown of Thorns as a tribute to Andy.

^small world (not really, we're talking about the internet) . I remember about a decade ago commenting on Bret's videos when I was into collecting vinyl and we were part of the "vinyl community" (VC as we called it) . I recall having discussions with him about The Cure.

Aww, Bret is the best! Always been a fan of his band(s) over the years and have been enjoying doing these ranking videos with him for the last year or two! We've done quite a few at this point, but of course, this one was a blast especially! <3

That's cool...but I don't consider NIN "metal." Do y'all? I mean, MAYBE a few tracks here and there fit the bill...Last and such...

Edit: oh, I see: the article isn't exactly calling NIN "metal." My bad.

Also, Jesus fuck. SLIPKNOT? For me, the answer is Tricky,.Portishead, Bjork, etc.

Wish is the music for the trailer to ITV4 (UK's) coverage of Tour de France. For some reason.
