It's cold today, so it's a Neverending White Lights kind of day. But first, the side project, Black Ribbons - Neuromancer. Daniel Victor is one of my favorite songwriters. There's a Depeche Mode feel to a lot of this, so I take to it immediately. https://blackribbons.bandcamp.com/album/neuromancer

still might be my favorite thing aaron turner has ever had a hand in. his singing voice is so beautiful and it's nice to hear him really exercising those chops. plus, plotkin's instrumentation is lush and gorgeous, and tim wyskida's drumming is wonderfully restrained and perfectly complimentary. the whole thing feels like what i imagine meditation would be like if i could actually do it.
well now I have to listen to the whole album since it's been incepted into my head from the Manso...I mean Sexual Asshatery thread.
The track "Insanity" is basically Danny being peak soundtrack Danny with the Boingo guys doing their level best to show him what a band sounds like as well. The two approaches come together very well for a song that feels like almost all buildup but keep it going for the whole seven minutes.
'I'm so sorry, please forgive meWho do I pray to to straighten out this problem? (problem)
Straighten out this problem (problem), straighten out my mind (Mind)
Straighten out ...this crooked tongue...(x3)
My mind has wandered, from the straight and narrow
My mind has wandered from the flock you see
My mind has wandered, the man just said so
My mind has wandered I heard it on TV
And the flock has wandered away from me.
All around the world now
Like a big bright cherry cloud
Traveling from home to home
TV sets and telephones
Here it comes just like a storm
Bathe in it and be reborn
Time to let the world know
Welcome madness, ...say hello...(x3)
Like a wave we cannot see
Washing over you and me
Hiding here and hiding there
Madness hiding everywhere
Such a curiosity
Here it comes to set us free
Plenty left for you and me
Say hello insanity
I am the virus, are you the cure?
I am morally(morally), I'm morally impure(Impure)
I am a disease and I am unclean
I am not part of God's well oiled machine
Christian nation(Nation), assimilate me(me)
Take me in your arms and set me free
I am part of a degenerate elite(elite)
Dragging our society into the street -yeah-
Into the abyss and to the sewer don't you see
The man just told me, he told me on TV
Do you think you're better than me
Do you want to kill me or befriend me
And the alcoholic bastard waved his finger at me
And His voice was filled with evangelical glee
Sipping down his gin & tonics
While preaching about the evils of narcotics
And the evils of sex, (sex) and the wages of sin (Sin)
While he mentally fondles his next of kin and
My mind has wandered from the flock you see
And the flock has wandered away from me
And he waved his hypnotizing finger at me
Let's imitate reality (Insanity)
Let's strive for mediocrity (Insanity)
Let's make believe we're all the same (Now that's for me)
Let's sanitize our little brains (Insanity)
I'd love to take you home with me and tuck you into bed
I'd love to see what makes you tick inside your pretty head
I'd love to hear you laugh tonight, I'd love to hear you weep
I'd love to listen to you while you're screaming in your sleep.
Christian sons, Christian daughters
Lead me along like a lamb to the slaughter
Purify my brain and hose down my soul
White perfection, perfection is my goal
Do you think you're better than me
Do you want to kill me, or befriend me
Christian nation(nation), make us alright
Put us through the filter and make us pure and white 'cause'
My mind has wandered away from me
And the flock has wandered, away from me
Let's talk of family values while we sit and watch the slaughter
Hypothetical abortions on imaginary daughters
The white folks think they're at the top, ask any proud white male
A million years of evolution, we get Danny Quayle
All around the world now
Like a big bright cherry cloud
Traveling from home to home
TV sets and telephones
Here it comes just like a storm
Bathe in it and be reborn
Time to let the world know
Welcome madness, ...say hello...(x3)
I'd love to take you home with me, I'd love to tuck you in
I wish I could protect you from the wages of our sin
I'd love to hear you scream tonight, I'd love to hear you cry
Protect you from the madness that is raining from the sky
Let's imitate reality (Insanity)
Let's strive for mediocrity (Insanity)
Let's make believe we're all the same (Now that's for me)
Let's sanitize our little brains (Insanity)
I'd love to take you home with me and tuck you into bed
I'd love to see what makes you tick inside your pretty head
I wish that I could keep you in a precious Chinese box
On Sundays I would pray for you so it would never stop
I'd love to hear you laugh tonight, I'd love to hear you weep
I'd love to listen to you while you're screaming in your sleep
I'd love to soothe you with my voice and take your hand in mine
I'd love to take you past the stars and out of reach of time
I'd love to see inside your mind, to tear it all apart
To cut you open with knife and find your sacred heart
I'd love to take your satin dolls and tear them all to shreds
I'd love to mess your pretty hair, I'd love to see you dead.'

It's so fucking good.
In general, I love slow burn albums much more than instant hooks. The payoff is just so much bigger.
Very much in love with Boundaries from Copenhagen these days. Debut record is out early March. Loving the atmosphere and darkness here...
It's weird to me how a guy known for Limp Bizkit riffs put something this chill out. But then that's also what I really like about music: you never really know what you're going to get out of a person until you listen to it.
I can't stop listening to this song. I fucking love Enter Shikari. They're NIN-esque with all of the layers and motifs. This song's chorus is the chorus from "No Sleep Tonight" on 2009's Common Dreads and Rou (lead vocals) confirmed that STC is the official "sequel" to NST and he went out of his way to incorporate what is now the chorus of STC into live performances of NST back to 2014.
They're hard leftists and their music is all about it. They're fucking awesome guys. I was lucky enough to meet Rou quickly in Denver in 2017. I love, love, LOVE this band.
Enter Shikari's outspoken support for the LBTGQ community and a fucking fun song. It's so catchy and so positive.
...and the immediately following song. Angry and fucking fun, too.
I'll stop posting about Enter Shikari now. I'm drunk and enjoying the fuck out of them right now.
Okay, I lied. One more.
...and then that filthy bass drop at 1:57.This is an appeal
To the struggling and striving
Stakeholders of this planet
This floating rock we call Earth
Alas, that means you
That means everyone of your acquaintance
Every figure your eyes skim past in the street
Every charlatan still to defeat
Every tender face you find solace in
Now mimic the mindset William Wallace was in
Dismount
Disembark
Descend from your existence
Slacken your angst and decant your hate
'Cause in the long run they're about as useful
As pouring acid onto your dinner plate
To muzzled masses that lead lives
Of deafening desperation
With Excalibur aloft King Arthur earned the throne
But it's our minds we got to wrench out of the stone
Don't be fooled by its simplicity
There was never a broadcast made of such urgency
'Cause at no time before us
Did we grasp the scope of this emergency
Ladle out love and logic by the boatload
Equipped with that cargo you can take any road
Now grab life
Seize time
This fight is for human kind
to quote me from the "Best of 2020" thread:Right now it's a hard tie between Stop the Clocks and Undercover Agents for best song.If I could write a love letter to Enter Shikari I seriously would. I saw the video to the first single from their 2020 album Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible and it entranced me. Something about the production of the song, the production of the video, the singing, the dancing, the lyrics...I don't know what it was, but I watched it probably ten times. Then instead of just listening to the album Mothership from a live show came up. This is...this is not my usual genre of music at all, but that Motherstep intro (as I eventually learned the name of) was enough of a hook to keep me there and the energy of that song and the band live was a lot. Like a lot a lot. I fell down a rabbit hole watching their videos and live shows and quarantine bits and I can't tell you the last time I felt this excited about a band. About anything, really. Like I'm a teenager again finding that band. I tried listening to their albums in order like I usually do when I find a new band and I couldn't do it, it didn't sound right to me, and I found that it's because I wasn't a hardcore kid. I was too old for it, but I'm not too old for their current sound. I can work backwards though, so I'm currently on Mindsweep and it's growing on me. Flash Flood and Common Dreads are both good but I'm sticking to Mindsweep for the moment, going slow.
I mean, to find a band that is talking a talk that is exactly what I'm feeling in a year like? I'm not putting it into words well but as the kids say it's hitting me in the feels.
It's weird, yeah? 2020 is weird.
Watching their live videos, I have no idea how they get their studio sounds without a fifth member on stage. And I know there's a possibility for programming but the spontaneity of their quickfire rounds make it seem so unrehearsed, like it's happening right there in front of you, that it's like watching a magician sometimes. you know it's not real but you can't see the feint.
We want your homes, we want your hearts, we want the things that you won't allow us, we won't use guns, we won't use bombs, we'll use the one thing we have more of, our minds.
Sparks
I've dipped the occasional toe into the Sparks catalogue over the years, but due to promotion of Edgar Wright's upcoming documentary The Sparks Brothers I've ended up listening to quite a lot. I love it.

Ya boy is the big guy holding the flag at 24 seconds in.
The Armed has been fantastic and a fucking Detroit Hardcore(?) juggernaut since 2009. Its so crazy seeing these guys getting global praise when I can recall seeing them play for literally three people including myself at a dive bar in 2013. Crazy how the shit goes. If ULTRAPOP is even half as good as Only Love, it will be the best record of 2021.
