So apparently the lyrics Robert included on his artwork "Drone:No Drone" are lyrics to the song "Fugue" from side B of the album:

The Cure playing a small gig for 6 music on 31 October, to be broadcast on Hew Stephen's show, with an extensive video interview going onto iPlayer; and later on that day another one for Jo Whiley on BBC 2

with the excitement at a high level for the release of SOALW, I'm curious, what was everyone's first Cure release as a fan?

I grew up listening to the Cure through my parents. they were fans of the band before I was even born, which is crazy to think about. the first album release where I was fully following the band on my own was the self titled. I was so excited and since it was MY first Cure album (and not the ones I listened to via my parents) I really convinced myself it was their best one yet (even if I was trying to force myself to like most of it! ) . even so, it'd be another 7 years before I'd get to see them live on the Reflection tour (envious of my parents who saw them in the 80's and early 90's ) .
there's a handful, at most, of artists I'll see live anytime they tour. The Cure are one of them.

Wish was the first album that got me into The Cure. I was raised in the 90s and when I heard Friday I'm In Love on the radio, I was hooked. My whole teenage look was inspired by Robert Smith. As I'm typing I remember going to the freshman dance with bedhead hair like Robert and my bangs combed down to cover my eyes. Got a few slow dances out of it. LOL.

Crow soundtrack was my gateway, but Wild Mood Swings had just come out when I got into the band. While it's far from a perfect record, I enjoy a lot of it, since I heard it before some of the classics. I also loved getting all the singles at the time, and then picking up each album as I found it - I think the first album of theirs I got though was Mixed Up, which was formative for me. The Top, Japanese Whispers, and The Glove album were hard to get ahold of, but it was a real treat when I found them.

I filled in the back catalogue from 1996-1999. The first album that came out when I was fully indoctrinated was Bloodflowers, and I have big love for that one too... My second concert ever was The Dream Tour, and it blew my mind, hearing so many deep cuts (Like Cockatoos, M, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep) alongside the new album and classic tracks. I was also blown away by how long the show was!

I kind of steered into looking like a younger (17-Pornography-era) Robert Smith from there on out, styled my hair as such, rocked the eyemakeup, etc. Learned to play bass and synth by teaching myself the classics... Got a Wish tattoo in my older years... It's an obsession that still hasn't passed.

Teaser of interview from mailing list:

Also, why can I NOT unsee that Robert Smith is just James May (Top Gear UK) in his goth era? Haha

I got into them just after bloodflowers. I thought (given the lyrical content) I’d missed the train and they were done. So self titled was the first release since I became a fan, but I’d covered they’re back catalogue by then.

I'm pretty sure I saw The Crow before 1998, but I was a South Park intro kid. When Kyle said "Disintegration is the best album ever!", I said "okay, let's see about that", ran out and got the album next day and fell in love.

But that was still really just my intro. For whatever reason - I feel like maybe I'd heard some of the poppier stuff and didn't dig it or heard they were too depressing and Disintegration was always a real hard listen, or my obsessions with NIN and The Pumpkins and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-On-This-Board and KMFDM etc... I didn't wind up pursuing much farther until years later.

I've already mentioned prior but I didn't dig Bloodflowers when it came out, and when I was hanging around with a bunch of pretentious goths in 2004, the self-titled didn't grab any of us. I just kind of put investigating them on the back burner for years and years until...shit, maybe late 2000s or early 2010's? I forget. So I haven't been a lifelong fan of the band as much as I've been for very select works.

Every now and then I wish I'd discovered the 17 Seconds to Pornography era along with Disintegration so I'd have just had that many more years with them.

Rumours are that next week there will be an announcement for a physical release. Maybe ICNBTS b-side?

    Hey @DMLiveWiki ,

When I recorded The Cure in 2007 I got the beginning of The Big Hand down here in Australia, had to change batteries, then recorded the end of it. I see it isn’t on YouTube. Do you have bootleg audio of the show that I could like append to the middle of the two clips so at least all of the audio is there and upload it as one single video with the missing video footage just playing the audio?

My older sister got me "Staring at the Sea" and it blew my mind (this was back in 1986 and I was just starting H.S.). My first proper album was Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. It was always a favorite. For some reason I grew away from them when Disintegration dropped: I didn't like the singles they released. The Crow drew me back but only to revisit the albums I had. It wasn't until a few years ago that I dug into Pornography and, later, Disintegration. At my age, Disintegration hits harder, especially as I lose more loved ones. This new album looks like it will be my next purchase.
