I am reading a ton of reviews on Discogs in regards to the remastered vinyl reissue of the album Wish. A ton of comments refernce the album "not being recorded well" back when it was originally made... what's the story there?

I never thought the album sounded bad. Always quite enjoyed it.
Maybe they're referring to the mastering issue on the original. It sounded a bit muffled. Here's more from the reissue press release:

When Wish was completed, Smith felt that they had achieved everything they had set out to do, but there was a glitch. "In the studio control room, it all sounded excellent, but I got too busy sorting out our upcoming concerts to properly oversee the mastering. It was too late to do anything about it; the album was out, and we were off around the world again. It has really bugged for me for a very long time.” Remastering the album earlier this year has finally given Smith the chance to address this “It has taken 30 years, but finally, finally, my Wish has come true.”

Yes that statement makes sense to me. It always felt like all it needed was a perfect mastering.

Speaking just as a big Wish fan, the actual mix on that album was always aces for me. But the original master did always feel a bit slight to my ears. So much so that, a decade ago, I made my own rough master of it just so I could throw the tracks into mixes and have them hold their own sonically. But all of that went away with the 30th remastered version for me. That's pretty much exactly how I've always wanted to hear that album and imo is now the definitive version.

Let’s remind ourselves of the beauty of the lyrics that’s been done… 90(!) times live now over the course of 2022 and 2023:

    Alone

    ~

This is the end of every song that we sing
The fire burned out to ash and the stars grown dim with tears
Cold and afraid, the ghosts of all that we've been
We toast, with bitter dregs, to our emptiness

And the birds falling out of our skies
And the words falling out of our minds
And here is to love, so much love
    Falling out of our lives
    Hopes and dreams are gone
    The end of every song

    And it all stops
We were always sure that we would never change
    And it all stops
Wе were always sure that wе would stay the same
    But it all stops
And we close our eyes to sleep
To dream a boy and girl
Who dream the world is nothing but a dream

    Where did it go?
    Where did it go?
Broken voiced lament to call us home
This is this end of every song we sing
    Where did it go?
    Where did it go?
    Where did it go?
    Where did it go?
Broken voiced lament to call us home
This is the end of every song we sing
    Alone

I'm not sure but that's interesting. So, is this the really real legit album cover? I've seen so many posts and mock-ups it's hard to know what's what. That one does look pretty nice, so fine by me if that's the one. Got to be honest when people first posted screen grabs of it rotating I wasn't feeling it. But with that added texture and dimension I think it looks really good. And cool to learn it's based on the sculptor's work from your Chain of Flowers link.

Funny you happen to post those lyrics by the way. Last night right before I passed out I was thinking of Alone and what it would sound like and realized that I had completely forgotten the words. I don't want to listen to the live version so that the single will be fresh, and instead I read the lyrics right before sleep, and yeah, fucking beautiful. Really made me appreciate the song on another level.

I've always loved that the very same person who wrote things like Doing the Unstuck and Friday I'm In Love also wrote stuff like One Hundred Years and, now, Alone. Once in a species songwriter. Neither afraid to look into the abyss and call it for what it is nor unwilling to celebrate the love and beauty.

Not that I’ve found but zooming in on the sticker, it does say:

    DELUXE EDITION
    ALBUM CD
    INSTRUMENTAL CD
    BONUS BLU-RAY
    WITH DOLBY ATMOS
    & HI-RES STEREO

So if this is legit, which it probably is, fuck yes!

    This is intriguing.

I wonder if it means the album without vocals, or an entirely stand-alone instrumental additional album like Lost Wishes?

Songs of a Lost World is out there

    From The Tongue of Kai:
Some promos of the album got send out to a selected group of journos. So expect some reviews in the next couple of days.

    From Richard Bellia:
Songs of a Lost World was played in its entirety to about ten journalists in a Universal Paris office this afternoon. One of them was seen crying while listening, "it's so beautiful"

Bloodflowers was my second Cure album. When it came out, I was only familiar with Disintegration and Burn. I didn't care for it much on release- and I remember that it sounded overly loud to my ears at the time - early loudness wars in action. Hilariously, I'm so used to it now.

All these years later, in my early forties, it hits a lot different, and harder. It's one of the rare albums I have trouble going back to for how much of an impact it has; it's so relatable now.

As I suspect SOALW will only become, more and more, as the years go by.

I see muddy get leveled at a lot of music from the 90s. Sometimes it may be warranted but I think some people are just allergic to layers in the low end. I've seen people say the same thing about Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, for example.

I always liked Wish's sound, but it was way too thin and quiet. The new remaster really did a good job of separating all that is happening in the mids and lows while emphasizing the highs, at least that's what I've noticed these last couple years I've had with the new version. Simon feels a bit further away and sometimes I actually miss the muddiness but it is by far the best Wish has ever sounded.

Bloodflowers on the other hand has ALWAYS sounded perfect to me. I've never thought it was overly loud. I do think that about self titled and 4:13, but that was just the whole music industry at the time.

I totally agree with you that Bloodflowers gets better with time. It's, for me, aged like fine wine. I love every track on it, it's a no skips album for me and always has been. Was listening to Watching Me Fall the other day, such a punishing track and gem of a Cure song. Bloodflowers is a top 5 Cure album for me, along with Disintegration, Pornography, Faith, and Wish.

    Oh, on another topic...

The other day, others were talking about how great Underneath the Stars is and I agree. It's existence alone justifies 4:13, it's that good. So, I'm listening to it yesterday and I noticed how awesome Jason Cooper's drumming is on that track and it got me wondering, is that his best composition? If not, what else might qualify? Cure fans haven't always given him enough credit but he's been a rock solid time keeper for years now and The Cure always sound great live, can't do that without a good drummer. I hope he gets a little shine on the new record.

And finally, on that same note, motherfucking Reeves Gabrels! The legend that went from being Bowie's guitarist to The Cure's. You can't possibly have a better resume than that! His playing always sounds ego free and in complete service of the music. I was thrilled when he joined and I still am after all these years. This is his Cure album debut and I'm excited to hear this lineup finally have their sound put to wax.

I love Jason's drumming on the live version of Burn. That may be my favorite.

Imagine if we get extra lucky and the instrumentals disc is, in fact, all original material unrelated to the album proper. What a time to be alive.

So… one of the vinyls says “half speed master”.

8 tracks… so we’ve pretty much heard the entire album live.

No track titles posted anywhere yet?

DELUXE EDITION IN A 6-PANEL DIGISLEEVE INCLUDES THE ALBUM
AND INSTRUMENTALS ON TWO CDS, PLUS A BLU-RAY WITH HI-RES STEREO
    AND DOLBY ATMOS MIXES.

THE CURE announce the release of their long-awaited new album 'SONGS OF A LOST WORLD' on 1st November

THE CURE will release their long-awaited new album,

'SONGS OF A LOST WORLD', on 1st November. The album, their 14th studio release, is their first in 16 years. Songs from the record were previewed during The Cure's 90-date, 33-country 'Shows Of A Lost World' tour for more than 1.3 million people to overwhelming fan and critical acclaim.

'ALONE, the first song released from the album, opened every show on the tour and is available to stream now.
The band will reveal the rest of the tracklisting for the record over the coming weeks at http://
www.songsofalost.world/ and on their social channels.

Speaking about 'ALONE, the opening track on 'SONGS OF A LOST WORLD', Robert Smith says, "It's the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus. I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of 'being alone', always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be... as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem 'Dregs' by the English poet Ernest Dowson... and that was the moment when I knew the song - and the album - were real." Check out 'Alone' - BELOW: https:// www.xsnoize.com/the-cure-announce-the-release-of-their-long-awaited-new-album-songs-of-a-lost-
