me too. im not a big DM fan at all, but that song was very cool.

i'm not feeling it, personally. as much as i love blues & goth mixed (nick cave, crime and the city solution, etc.) i don't think it works well with depeche mode (though i liked it on dave's second solo record). the song is kind of a snoozer until the midway point when the electronics really kick in but it still doesn't wow me.
still holding out for some great album cuts. i loved playing the angel but loathed sounds of the universe, so i'm curious to see where it goes from here. hopefully the tour is a little more imaginative in the setlist department. still feel like a chump for paying $100 to hear new songs, the same hits, and a few rarer singles (strangelove, fly on the windscreen).
^ I was going to ask why Dave is doing a Nick Cave impression. I already have albums full of this stuff.
(Also the music sounds a bit like modern Manson)
I love the shit out of this.. Industrial blues with a chorus that somehow sounds like The Beatles.. I'm most impressed! Though i said something similar with 'Wrong' and was let down by the rest of the SOTU album. I live in hope this album remains consistant with 'Angel' or whateveryoucallit.
I'm loving it! Liking Dave's voice also. Maybe its because I'm a Cave fan boy.
Loving the new song and just got my tickets for June. Can't wait! Only thing left to do: release a great record!
i am, too... but there's enough cave and cave-related material out there to keep me more than satisfied (just saw crime & the city solution last night and it was amazing). however, i really don't like the mix of blues riffs and electronics (nor do i like modern bands jocking the cave thing while i'm here). but hey, enjoy! i'm gonna sit this one out and not buy until i know what the rest of the album sounds like.
i swore i'd never become that guy, but we really need to get alan wilder back in here to help reign those two in.
Love the sound of the new track. Watching the press conference now.
I'm actually kinda surprised Alan hasn't come back yet. You'd think the door would be open. They've all been pretty chummy lately. Think it's only a matter of time (or a question of time?).
Crying at the price of the tickets £55!!!! damn concert tix are soon going to reach £100!
New track is alright. Grabbed me on the first listen more than "Wrong" did, at least. I agree there's some definite Cave-channeling going on though.
I forgot just how good Ultra is/was. Had it on in the car this morning doing good old errands. Took me back to high school when a friend of mine gave me the CD because he thought it was shite. It's been forever since I've listened to it.
I remember reading in a magazine review long ago that Dave was high as hell recording "Sister of Night?" Ryan? frankie? I could defer that question to you two if I may.
I remember reading somewhere that Dave recorded song of the vocals in rehab.
i vaguely recall this article as well, probably had the magazine eons ago but damned if i know where it went. lost all my clippings a long time ago. however, dave was a downright wreck when recording that album and it shows on songs like 'barrel of a gun' where you can downright hear the strain in his voice and the heroin drag in the chord changes. i wouldn't be surprised if he was high as a kite while singing the majority of that record, though i know he did a lot of the vocals while he was recovering in rehab. we're lucky he got out of that era alive...
Depeche Mode is one of the few bands that doesnt completely blow sober.
They may not be as genius as they were in the 90's but they are still damn fantastic with everything they do now. I still purchase every record from them. Cant say the same for another dark electronic artist we all know...
i'm not even sure i could attribute their not being quite as awesome to sobriety. Maybe it just comes with getting older? But damn they are still excellent.
well, it's difficult to draw comparisons to a one man, one band, one addiction scenario to what depeche mode went through in the 90s. at the time, dave wasn't a songwriter for the band. i can't speak for martin's intake, but as the main songwriter, it seems like he's remained fairly consistent if but past prime, which happens to most bands with a long career as discussed elsewhere.
long story short, you can't draw a comparison to NIN here, nor do i think drugs had much to do with the songwriting process for DM, aside from an obviously dark edge to ultra that reflects what they were going through at the time, trying to carve a new identity after losing alan & dealing with dave.
helping out with the question at hand, tune in about 17 minutes in. sounds like he was definitely high when doing the vocals, doing them syllable by syllable:
Thanks Piko and frankie! That video you posted is my night viewing I think. I think I need to revisit the early 80s a lot more, we used to play Heroes of Might and Magic III to The Singles 81-85.
Nothing like being in a strategic huge fight, and having "Photographic" as the backing track.

i'm your man if you ever need early 80s recommendations, DM or otherwise.

On the band's website, Depeche Mode's Martin Gore said, "The music has a similar vibe to [1990's] Violator and [1993's] Songs of Faith and Devotion and I think the songs on the album are among some of the very best we've done." Meanwhile, describing the record, Dave Gahan said it's "not a blues record, but it definitely has a soulful vibe."
Can't wait. I like what I hear.
Columbia Records just announced the signing of Depeche Mode.
Can we entertain the idea of a Depeche Mode/HDTA tour?
The fact that Depeche Mode went to Columbia should quiet the people who complained that HTDA signed to them. Obviously they're doing something right over there. With the sale of EMI to Universal, they were contractually obligated to shed certain bigger acts (Pink Floyd, etc), so I'm guessing DM was one of those. Daniel Miller has expressed interest in buying back Mute Records, but then he wouldn't have the huge distribution that they enjoyed with EMI, which a band like Depeche Mode needs. One could argue they don't need it, but they don't seem like the sort of band that wants to go the DIY route like NIN or Radiohead.
Awesome!

Dave Gahan joined Soulsavers for an intimate show at Capitol Studios a few months ago, performing songs from their album “The Light The Dead See”, which Dave co-wrote with Rich Machin and Soulsavers. Watch the entire 30 minute performance on rollingstone.com.

I was just browsing though the Depeche Mode tag on Instagram, and found some photos of a NYC stylist called Mark Holmes who worked on Corbijn's videoshoot with DM in New Orleans last November. The photos were online all this time but he tagged only a few with #depechemode, so that must be why they went unnoticed. These photos give more of an idea of what the video(s) will look like. As you know, a month ago a local newssite revealed that DM was going to shoot a video in a church.
On the 25th of November, he uploaded a pic of himself with the caption, "Kicking back with a glass of whiskey watching dexter at my second home. A rare night off before going to New Orleans to shoot with Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn."

(Also, your Danzig collection is CRAZY awesome!)

Yeah there was an interview done recently and they listened to the one played at the press conference (non-demo form I'm guessing) and Heaven.
Martin said the title for the other one would naturally be "Angel" or "Angel Of Love" but since it isn't a soft song he isn't happy with those titles.
