Eddie Vedder re: Bonfire Of Teenagers: "some of the best Morrissey stuff I’d heard in years" / Andrew Watt confirmed as producer (January 14, 2022)
OPEN LETTER TO JOHNNY MARR
>
This is not a rant or an hysterical bombast. It is a polite and calmly measured request: Would you please stop mentioning my name in your interviews?
Would you please, instead, discuss your own career, your own unstoppable solo achievements and your own music?
If you can, would you please just leave me out of it?
The fact is: you don’t know me. You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings. Yet you talk as if you were my personal psychiatrist with consistent and uninterrupted access to my instincts. We haven’t known each other for 35 years - which is many lifetimes ago. When we met you and I were not successful. We both helped each other become whatever it is we are today. Can you not just leave it at that? Must you persistently, year after year, decade after decade, blame me for everything … from the 2007 Solomon Islands tsunami to the dribble on your grandma’s chin ?
You found me inspirational enough to make music with me for 6 years. If I was, as you claim, such an eyesore monster, where exactly did this leave you? Kidnapped? Mute? Chained? Abducted by cross-eyed extraterrestrials? It was YOU who played guitar on ‘Golden Lights’ - not me.
Yes, we all know that the British press will print anything you say about me as long as it’s cruel and savage. But you’ve done all that. Move on. It’s as if you can’t uncross your own legs without mentioning me. Our period together was many lifetimes ago, and a lot of blood has streamed under the bridge since then. There comes a time when you must take responsibility for your own actions and your own career, with which I wish you good health to enjoy. Just stop using my name as click-bait. I have not ever attacked your solo work or your solo life, and I have openly applauded your genius during the days of ‘Louder than bombs’ and ‘Strangeways, here we come’, yet you have positioned yourself ever-ready as rent-a-quote whenever the press require an ugly slant on something I half-said during the last glacial period as the Colorado River began to carve out the Grand Canyon. Please stop. It is 2022, not 1982.
Morrissey. January 2022.
Small clip of “I Am Veronica” from Bonfire Of Teenagers album can be heard in the clip advertising the Las Vegas residency shows here. The official Morrissey instagram account has a version posted with no voiceover on top:

I'm still really bummed the You Are the Quarry LP repress got cancelled, even if the reissue album art was dreadful.

His voice is still as buttery smooth as it ever was.
I, I, I, I, I am Veronica
The game I play is older than America
There's a tiny spot allocated each of us
So why should each day be exactly the same?
This is your last chance
This is your last chance
So slide me into your pocket now
And press your finger hard
On the top bell, top bell
Press your finger hard
On the top bell, top bell
Dolphins swim to rescue you
Schools of fish will keep your float abloat
Owls bow their learned brow
So slide me into your pocket now
I, I, I, I, I am Veronica
The game I play is older than America
The tiny spot allocated each of us
So make your mark
And now you be the spark
This could be your last chance
This could be your very last go
So slide me into your pocket now
And press your finger hard
On the top bell, the top bell
Press your finger hard
On the top bell
Dolphins swim to rescue you
Schools of fish will keep your float abloat
Owls bow their learned brow
So slide me into your pocket now
I, I, I, I, I am Veronica
The game I play is older than America
I, I, I, I, I am Veronica
I can also play harmonica
New song is fantastic so here's hoping the production on the studio version sounds good, I haven't really liked the last few albums have sounded sonically.

The Morrissey concerts in Las Vegas in July will showcase songs from the album 'Bonfire Of Teenagers', which was recorded in January 2021.
"The thrill of this album was the speed under which it was recorded. Considering the knots of grief I had experience[d] at the time, it made 'Bonfire' an incredible achievement for me."
Morrissey.

Wow. Apologising for having grown old.
And that last refrain about swallowing hospital food without choice is such a depressing representation of end of life.
What a depressing song.
Bonfire Of Teenagers.
By ear.
Live preamble:
This, this song is new.
It's about, it's about England's 9/11
And yes, I heard you, I heard what you just did under your breath.
And erh, as well you might.
Obviously, in jolly old England, most people won't talk about it.
But,
I will.
Bonfire of teenagers
Which is so high it made North West sky
Oh you shoulda seen her leave for the arena
And the way she turned and waved and smiled
Goodbye goodbye
And the silly people sing don't look back in anger
And the morons sing and sway
Don't look back in anger
I can assure you I will look back in anger 'till the day I die.
Bonfire of teenagers
Which is so high it made North West sky
And oh you shoulda seen her leave for the arena only to be
Vaporised
Vaporised
And all the silly people say
Don't look back in anger
All the morons sing and sway
Don't look back in anger
I can assure you I will look back in anger 'till the day I die
Go easy on the killer
Go easy on the killer
Go easy on the killer
Go easy on the killer
Easy on, go easy on the killer
Go easy on, go easy on the killer
I Live In Oblivion
By ear.
Live preamble:
This, This passion play...
That you call life...
When you come to the end, you will be either:
Shoved in a hospice,
Shoved in a home,
or at the mercy of the N_HS.
Which is a fate worse than life.
And this song is I Live In Oblivion.
I apologise I grew old
I apologise I grew tired
I apologise I grew old
And now I live in oblivion
And it suits me very well
I live in oblivion and it suits me very well
And the only thing that can kill me is the hospital food
And the only one left to visit me is you
I knew the best, the worst, the last
I knew them all
I set the world on fire and now I'm tired
And now I live in oblivion
And it suits me very well
I'll live in oblivion and it suits me very well
And the only thing that can kill me is the hospital food
And the only one left to visit me there is you
Shove it in your mouth
Come on
Open wide
123
One more spoonful
Down the hatch
123
One more spoonful
There's a good boy
There's a good boy
Oh, there's a good boy
There's a good boy
Oh there's a good boy
There's a good boy
There's a good boy
There's a good boy
There's a good boy
Oh there's a good boy
There's a good boy
Roughly by ear.
Corrections welcome.
Rebels Without Applause:
Gang's all gone and I soldier on (smoulder?)
I who saw them leave, I cried bereaved
One by one
I saw them stall?
Rebels without applause.
The gang's all gone and now I am the only one
No more to give, too late to ?
The last star on the bill
I see them still
Rebels Without Applause
(Bawdy?) Bonnie boys of song and girls of long gone
I loved them all
Bonnie boys of song and girls of long gone
I loved them all
The gang's all gone
Come dance with light
Light lost, children go because we must do.
And the 'blue flu'? must come for you
Rebels without applause
(Bawdy?) Bonnie boys of song and girls of long gone
I loved them all
Bonnie boys of song and girls who all went wrong
I loved them all
Generation X and X-ray Spex
We loved them all
I see them still x3
I loved them all x3

Sure Enough, the Telephone Rings:
Sure enough, the telephone rings
Who wants my money now?
Otherwise the telephone never would ring
No oh oh oh
Sure enough, the telephone rings
who wants my money now?
---(I can't seem to decipher the next line)--
Please be fair,
You must tell the kids the live in hell now (x2)
Sure enough, the telephone rings
Who wants my money now?
Otherwise the telephone never would ring
No oh oh oh
Sure enough, the telephone rings
Who wants my body now?
Buried, dug up, Buried, then dug up again
Please be fair,
You should tell the little kids they live in hell now (x2)
It's only fair
You should tell the little kids they live in hell now (x2)

That's a banging setlist, I'll be totally satisfied if that's what we get in November.
