Russian jets scrambled after 'uncovering' deadly US nuclear bombers
2020 needs to slow it's fucking roll.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been conducting military strikes against each other for the past 3 days. Azerbaijan is backed by Turkey, Armenia has a mutual defense treaty with Russia. 100 or so soldiers have died since the conflict started, and one Armenian jet has been shot down by allegedly a Turkish F-16.
I think these two have a long history of off-and-on conflict. The previous full scale war between these two happened from 1988 - 1994, which resulted in 5,856 - 6,000 casualties. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagorno-Karabakh_War)
**edit** If anyone else is interested in the current state of the conflict, Wikipedia has an up-to-date page of the current events that have been confirmed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_N...abakh_conflict

California Twentynine Palms: Explosives are missing from the nation's largest Marine Corps base and an investigation is underway - CNN
this is patently not a good thing.
and there was a hummer missing last month as well; at least they found it though.
Also, they know it's an issue.
So HEY, GUYS!
Who's ready for it?!
We're playing chicken with Russia.
Nobody in Washington or Moscow gives a fuck about people IN the Ukraine: in fact, Ukraine seems to be unhappy about some of the alarmist rhetoric coming from the US.
YAY! PROXY WARS!
Biden accidentally said what he REALLY thought, with the "minor incursion" talk, faced massive backlash, and now...yeah. We're going full warm-part-of-cold war.
There are many different scenarios wherein this could go off the rails. If we let Russia invade Ukraine, China might invade Taiwan.
If we take a hardline approach, and Russia is SERIOUS about invading Ukraine, well, that's a fuse nobody wants to see lit.

I'm sure someone has talked about this but it feels like nobody is talking about the through line here if Crimea, sanctions, propping up trump to weaken the us, and now this.
Not to mention the potential consequences for Belarus: the US threatened THEM if "they," aka their pro russian, illegitimate strongman leader, aids Russia in any way.
Meanwhile, the EU (minus Germany) is NOT following the US in this frightening rhetoric, as far as removing diplomats and such.
Neither Ukraine nor Russia are in NATO.
I recommend this article:

Ukraine to Putin and lots of Russia is like Taiwan to China.
Ukraine joining NATO would mean NATO accepting Ukraine’s sovereignty. But, just like this totally pissing off China re Taiwan, this is totally pissing off Russia.

Reagan took us to the brink of war with China over Taiwan. See Six Assurances.

While all THIS posturing at the border of Ukraine is happening, THIS is what Putin has been up to near Ireland:
Russia cutting cable communication lines on the sea bottom near the coast of Ireland, and Irish fisherman are trying to prevent it??

@allegro I honestly think we should just agree to NOT admit Ukraine to NATO, at least for some time.
I think that's a big bargaining chip.
Also, a LOT of Ukrainians are pro Russian.
And, TO BE FAIR, do you remember Sec of State Baker's "Not one inch eastward" promise to Gorbachev, regarding NATO expansion? That's one of MANY lies the US told during those years.

These fucking Trumpanzees are such hypocrites and idiots.
After Biden made the “it depends” on how far Russia goes comment at the longest press conference in history, the Trumpanzees were all over Twitter:
“oh, JUST THE TIP, JOE??”
“Selling out Ukrainians JUST LIKE IN AFGHANISTAN!!”
“Biden is WEAK!!”
Now, the Trumpidiots:
“Biden STARTING A WAR!”
“This never happened UNDER TRUMP!”
“If we go to war, it’s BECAUSE OF BIDEN!”
Wtf
They don’t understand foreign policy or foreign relations. They bitch about being the world police, elect a guy (Trump) who says he’ll refuse to allow the U.S. to be the world police. But then they demand that Biden put us in the position of being world police. And then bitch when it looks like we might be lining up to be world police.

Trumpanzees lmao that's a new one
At the risk of sounding like.an elitist of some sort, I will say that this is what happens when a big fuckton of people who don't understand government very much, at all, suddenly see themselves in a racist, misogynistic idiotic "politician," who starred in a reality show.
This was part of the plan, all along. Trump, and his base, are 'useful idiots."
I still think that the majority of this entire phenomenon was engineered by Steve Bannon and Roger Stone: people who knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
McConnell and others went along with it for awhile, to get the SCOTUS seats, for instance, but now, some of those cats are about to be eaten by the monster they helped create.
It's a bit like Cheney and Bush betting on the inability of Americans to understand that Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were different people, and figuring that people would assume that Iraq was involved in 9/11.

It always seems like it all boils down to what the POTUS and Putin say or do; and that POTUS is the NATO-Free-World-Decision-Making-Leader. It always seems to come down to what the POTUS & Americans do. That may be true I don't know, I sure know that no one cares what my Prime Minister does or says (Justin Trudeau).
Dude. I actually saw an article regarding the confluence of epidemics and social unrest in Newsweek awhile back.
They looked at 57 epidemics between 1300 and 1918 "finding only four occasions where revolts were NOT clearly connected with the respective outbreaks."
It seems that, historically, social upheaval and conflict are par for the course in times like these.

The way I read it is this: Basically Putin is afraid. That's why his regime got more and more violent towards his own people (shutting down protests), opposition in Russia and abroad (poisoning, killings) and ex-soviet countries such as Ukraine. That's also why he's pushing nationalism and glorifying Russia's soviet past. And in that narrative Ukraine belongs to Russia and the western world (with the US at its front) is trying to sabotage this rightful union, while in reality every independent nation has the right to choose its own relations and not to be invaded by its jealous neighbour.

Yes, I follow Reade on social media, and her alleged experiences with Biden in the past have clearly informed her politics; she seemingly rallies against anything espoused or supported by Biden. So, her stance on this issue is unsurprising.
On the flip side, Western media has been manufacturing consent for this conflict hard for a while now, so it’s not just RT that’s busy propagandising.

Is Russia really going to formerly invade Ukraine? Where'd they put that old doomsday clock?
https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/current-time/
100 seconds. That's like playing "You Suffer" about 75 times.
Less PutIn, more PutOut.
Well, they invaded.
I mean, they invaded in 2014. They've ramped up to kill more people and seize more resources and infrastructure, and activated this next phase. It's so fucking useless. The open stream of intelligence from the Russian military direct to the US, which (wisely, I think) just relayed it as-is to the public, seems to indicate that at least some members of the Russian military think this is whack too, but with Putin running the show, no one's going to push back from the inside. It's a fucking shame. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian community.
Putin’s speech was disturbing. He basically said that this is a “peace mission” for “denazification” of Ukraine. Except President Zelenskyy is Jewish and totally NOT a Nazi. Nor is Ukraine. Then Putin reminded the world that he has lots of nuclear weapons, said that Ukraine “has never been an autonomous state, anyway” (not true), and Putin warned: “Anyone who tries to interfere with us, or even more so, to create threats for our country and our people, must know that Russia’s response will be immediate and will lead you to such consequences as you have never before experienced in your history.”
And now word is that he’s basically played a possible checkmate move by placing troops in Russian “client state” Belarus and has aimed missiles at several EU countries.
