By the way, if you want a "fun" read about some of the greed and incompetence over the years in regards to the wreck of the Titanic, check out the Wikipedia page. This bit is particularly infuriating:
In 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1998 RMS Titanic Inc. carried out an intensive series of dives that led to the recovery of over 4,000 items in the first two expeditions alone. The 1996 expedition controversially attempted to raise a section of the Titanic itself, a section of the outer hull that originally comprised part of the wall of two first-class cabins on C Deck, extending down to D Deck. It weighed 20 tons, measured 15 by 25 feet (4.6 m × 7.6 m) and had four portholes in it, three of which still had glass in them. The section had come loose either during the sinking or as a result of the impact with the sea bed.
Its recovery using diesel-filled flotation bags was turned into something of an entertainment event, with two cruise ships accompanying the expedition to the wreck site. Passengers were offered the chance, at $5,000 per person, to watch the recovery on television screens in their cabins while enjoying luxury accommodation, Las Vegas-style shows, and casino gambling aboard the ships. Various celebrities were recruited to enliven the proceedings, including Burt Reynolds, Debbie Reynolds and Buzz Aldrin, and "grand receptions" for VIPs were scheduled on-shore where the hull section would be displayed.
However the lift ended disastrously when rough weather caused the ropes supporting the bags to snap. At the moment the ropes broke, the hull section had been lifted to within only 200 feet (60 m) of the surface. It hurtled 12,000 feet (3,700 m) back down, embedding itself upright on the sea floor. The attempt was strongly criticised by marine archaeologists, scientists, and historians as a money-making publicity stunt; several publications compared the event to grave robbing, and Ballard called the event "a carnival" and stated that "We tried to put it to rest, but this perpetuates the tragedy." A second, successful attempt to lift the fragment was carried out in 1998. The so-called "Big Piece" was conserved in a laboratory in Santa Fe for two years before being put on display at the Luxor Las Vegas hotel and casino.
It's even worse when you come to realize his end game was to get in bed with the oil and gas industry but he knew they'd never sign on with an unproven technology. To get around that he decided to do tourism so he could use those dives as extended sea trials / proof of concept to sell the oil companies on his sub concept. They died as paying guinea pigs.
@Demogorgon why are you facepalming those people above?
These memes and Tik Tok videos are hilarious though lmao
speaking of...can we get a TikTok embed option/shortcut? Is that possible yet?

Mexican Cartels Are Threatening Anyone Who Moves, Cuts or Laces Anything With Fentanyl As It’s “Too Dangerous”
This is like the Satanists taking on the Church because the government won't.The latest adversary in the war against fentanyl? None other than the Sinaloa cartel.
According to members of the international crime ring, the “Chapitos” — the nickname for four of incarcerated drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s sons that are running the operation — are cracking down on the production and sale of the powerful synthetic opioid within their territories.
Though this new approach to fentanyl comes after several incidents regarding the Sinaloa cartel, including the capture of Chapitos leader Ovidio Guzmán back in January and the United States indictment of the Chapitos and several of their colleagues later in the spring, they’re not messing around.
The punishment for violating these new policies, they said, may include death, a sentiment outlined in several banners signed with the drug-dealing quartet’s moniker.
“In Sinaloa, the sale, manufacture, transport or any kind of business involving the substance known as fentanyl, including the sale of chemical products for its elaboration, is permanently banned,” read one banner hung in the Mexican city of Culiacán, according to The Wall Street Journal. “You have been warned. Sincerely yours, the Chapitos.”
But this appears to be far from the only sign warning against the sale of drugs.
“Due to the epidemic that plagues our country and our neighbor's and the loyalty to our principles, we want to aid government efforts and CDS to eradicate the lethal drug known as FENTANYL,” read another purported poster, images of which have been shared to the r/Pics subreddit and translated by users in the comments. “Now it won't just be forbidden as it always has been within our business but now we will persecute [sic] and punish the people who make, sell, transport, or lace this drug.”
Fentanyl bans: Because dead customers can’t buy drugs.
I can get behind this for sure. Can't wait to hear about the reporter's car mysteriously exploding.
EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
Billionaires have been operating on the “border of legality” in using shell companies to avoid tax and the world’s 3,000 wealthiest individuals should be charged a 2% levy on their wealth, a research group created to inform EU tax policy has claimed.
Taylor Swift is TIME's Person of the Year. Give me a fucking break.
*eye roll*
It's actually crazy to me that Time is still around.
I actually want to see this TaySway concert movie. C’mon you genius, blow my fucking mind already, because I do not get it at all
I've now heard Swift referred to as the greatest live performer of all time, a genius, a poet on par with Shakespeare (seriously, not making that one up)... A Shakespeare scholar apparently said that. I've heard her referred to as the new Grateful Dead. There's now a Harvard class dedicated to exploring the words and music of Taylor Swift. It's all insanity to me... so I'm ready Taytay... melt my fucking face with your awesome mind-blowing concert video.

Happy 80th birthday to Keith Richards today. A miracle of modern chemistry!
Elected official among six D.C. residents fined for double voting in 2020Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon... you know, cause I've worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time. The panel said she had told them that "she did vote in person in DC in the 2020 [general election], but that she did not recall voting" in Maryland. After being shown her signature on a voting card from Maryland, Rubio "acknowledged that the signature was hers, albeit a 'sloppier' version" and said it was "possible" she voted there but didn't "recall doing so."
"Finally, Ms. Rubio stated that it was 'never really stated that you are not able to vote in more than one state,' and that she thought that if one attempted to do so, the 'system' would block one from doing so," the board's order said.
So, yesterday a law was passed in Greece that allows same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples, which is great. But what is more sweet for me is that this law was brought forward and partly passed by the current ruling right-wing (by European standards that is), conservative party, with the support of a few opposition parties. The right wing party that is widely supported by groups of people that cringe, rage and/or clutch their pearls at anything LGBTQ related. This is not unusual attitude in Greece to be sure, even from people that support more progressive parties, we are still a relatively conservative society after all. But the right wing parties obviously get the lion's share of these people, so I giggle a bit at this "betrayal". On the other hand, I do worry a bit that this will lead a not insignificant part of their voters to more extreme right-wing options (i.e. fascist/religious right/outwardly racist), which sadly have a pretty consistent ~10% parliamentary representation for more than a decade now. It will be interesting to see what happens come next elections, which are about 3.5 years away.
