The Miramax 'Halloween' tv series will be a creative reset for the series. Looks like it's well underway too, so that's exciting.
Important quote:

I'll take a sequel that doesn't need to be there over any prequel that pretends to be seminal.
It's not like any Alien sequel needed to exist. Aliens kills the whole premise of Alien by basically saying "Hey, one xenomorph is kinda cool, but a thousand is way cooler, amiright ? High five !". On paper, it's a very lowbrow approach to the original's menace, something a kid would dream up.
I see Alien sequel like they're comic books. You've got a Cameron, a Fincher, a Jeunet (yep) take hold of a premise and run with it. If anything I wish the studios just let authors have their fun, it's a universe that lends itself to pure horror, action, metaphysical questioning or just campy fun. It's surprisingly adaptable, the lore is minimal (yeah, fuck Prometheus) and allows for any interpretation, just like its central recurring monster.
That Alien products don't need to exist is kinda part of the fun in my eyes. It's more often miss than hit, sure, but so far it's filled with lots of retrospective fun if you don't take it too seriously.

It was okay. Better than the DTV sequels at least, but it felt like the Blumhouse version of Hellraiser. I felt like it could have gone farther than it did.

In general, I'm always pretty skeptical of any remake, sequel, prequel, reboot, requel, etc. Especially ones that involve riding the coattails of a great 70s horror film (see the latest Exorcist).
But even I have to admit the trailer for this looks pretty decent. Doesn't mean the movie will be, but so far so good. It probably helps that I never really loved The Omen all that much. It always seemed a lesser film than things like Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Shining from that era of horror. I respect it for what it is, but creepy children in horror is a weird genre that does nothing for me and so the fact this story is going to focus on something other than a creepy kid might be good for it.
I should add though, that my bar for religious horror is pretty high this year, as I just saw Immaculate last weekend and it's going to be hard to top that I think. The film did not hold back any punches and was smartly written with a very clear point, a point it conveys without being too heavy handed and leaves the viewer with plenty of room for contemplation. Leaving the theatre I may have said it was a bit too lean, which would be a rare criticism from me because I love lean, concise films. After thinking about it for a week, I think it's efficiency will work in the long run and it's themes and messages will still be interesting many years from now.

I just saw Late Night with the Devil in the theaters, and I liked it. It’s supposed to come out streaming on Shudder in a couple weeks I think. Entertaining concept, interesting aesthetic, good acting… the possessed girl is legitimately unnerving. considering what it’s about it never really goes off the rails into batshit territory. Maybe the ending could have been a little more satisfying, but I’ll avoid spoilers.
I’d recommend it, at least to check it out when it comes out on Shudder

The more i think about it, the more i think it's the best horror flick since The Lighthouse.
It goes into territory i've never seen ANY film touch...at least, not like this.
There is a LOT of "blink and you'll miss it" stuff...I also caught a LOT of hidden shit- they BOMBARD you with it in the mini-doc at the beginning - and i feel that this thing was meant to be watched with headphones, and rewound and paused. There are words written in french, for no discernable reason, but they add to the theme when translated. I adore shit like that.
Being a student of the early Yeshua movement, i also REALLY dug the choice of entity in this one: it was considered the Monad by one school of what we now call Gnosticism, and i WANNA say it was revered by at least one early REGULAR church father, but what's trippy is that it goes back FURTHER, and, where the fuck it even CAME from is debated, which adds another layer to the whole thing.
I could write an essay on this one, but i don't wanna get into spoiler territory. I WILL say this, though: this thing was SMART, and stuck with me. It has some open ended/fill in the blanks yourself stuff going on, too, but not TOO much.
I'm going to go ahead and say that this thing is destined to become AT LEAST a cult classic, and that it's already the "one to beat," this year.

I just watched Host (2020) again, the found footage Covid movie where the whole thing takes place over a Zoom call where some girls hold a seance and summon a malevolent spirit… and I barely remember watching it. I’d say it’s “better than I remember it being,” but I don’t really remember it that well. I think I just had it on in the background.
Anyway, it’s a good movie, and it’s cool to see how a small budget can pull off a clever concept.

Been a bit of a mixed bag in terms of horror this year, at least from what I've seen so far. Really enjoyed I Saw The TV Glow and Cuckoo, Late Night With The Devil was fun but could have been better, and Longlegs left me cold and wanting to see other, better films. I saw Strange Darling over the weekend and...oof. I don't know why people are going crazy for that film. Looked nice, and the performances were fine, but it was a hot mess otherwise.

Just watched Longlegs, and man... What a ride. BRAVO to Nicolas Cage for playing one of the creepiest, twisted antagonists I have ever seen on screen. He brings so much dedication to the role, you would think Longlegs was a real person. There is of course a scene where you get vintage, over-the-top Cage, but it fits with the character so well, you cannot help but just appreciate it.
The film is incredibly well thought out, tightly directed, with a lot of little things that you will pass up if your eyes aren't peeled. There is one particular piece of camera work I don't think I've ever seen in a horror film, towards the end, and there are a few things that aren't 100% explained, but I don't feel they need to be.
Maika Monroe is also another that really dives into her role. She is offbeat, doesn't say much, and adds to the allure, and dread the movie carries. She comes off just as mysterious to the audience, as she does to the characters that are around her. All the acting is so solid here, you really get pulled in, especially wearing headphones.
All in all, the movie really starts off strong, and then goes off the rails midway, to the end, once you start to learn more about Longlegs, which is also not fully explained, and doesn't need to be. It adds to the legacy of the character that the less you know, the better in this case. The movie knows exactly what it wants to be, and what it is trying to showcase to the audience.
I can understand why some may not get too invested into the movie, but it's rare that you get original stuff like this. You really need to leave your expectations at the door.

The Spooky season is upon us!!
I caught I Saw The TV Glow a couple weeks ago and I thought it was fantastic. A deeply human film. And, without spoilers, that scene toward the end that took place in an arcade was soul crushing. Been thinking about it ever since. Yet to see Cuckoo but it looks interesting.
Yeah I pretty much agree with this completely. Longlegs was great. It very carefully walks a tightrope between black comedy and genuine horror which is not an easy thing to do. If it has any faults I'd say they come in the final sequence but even so, the last scene just before before the credits roll was chef's kiss. Caught an interview Osgood Perkins did and it was worth the listen. He's direct and honest in a way most directors aren't. And I mean, the trick he lifted from Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, of all films, paid off very well I think.
For me, it fell just shy of The Blackcoat's Daughter for his best film, although it is undeniably more fun. But the Blackcoat's Daughter was just a much more lean and pure horror film, very much in the same league as The VVitch and Hereditary and, like those 2 movies, was made before the A24 trend caught fire in horror, so he was ahead of the game I think.
Oh, speaking of Blackcoat's, Kiernan Skipka's small cameo like role in Longlegs was brilliant and she completely stole that scene.
