Got a surprise late birthday present today... The Zatoichi box set! The thing is gorgeous and feels very "deluxe". The box is extra-sturdy cardboard, similar to the quality used for hardcover book slipcases/boxes. The whole packaging and presentation is like they took the AK 100 and the Janus Films sets and combined them, which is a good thing in this case.

Makes me wish they could get limited distribution rights for all of the Toho Godzilla films...

...And I want Jigoku. The DVD is still in print, so yeah.

He is considered the Spanish version of Terrence Malick in terms of making films infrequently and with great beauty.
I just saw that El Sur is on their HULU page.

Also the Barnes and Noble sale started yesterday and runs through December 1.

I have some cash but I haven't bought anything yet. Plus, I'm waiting for some card that has $500 which I hope to win.

While it's not one of my favorite films by Fellini, I am stoked about the new DVD/Blu-Ray upgrade for Satyricon which means I can give away my old copy to the local library. Don't Look Now. Holy shit! Sutherland-Christie sex scene in HD.

I was so stoked about Satyricon that I failed to notice that more hd ozu is also on the way.

I've seen Cries & Whispers, The Soft Skin, and The Thin Blue Line as I've added them to my wishlist as well as the other 2 films by Errol Morris and Hoop Dreams as I've only seen bits of the latter.

I would love to have that Ozu set. You can never get enough Ozu. I'm also excited about The River which is one of my favorite Renoir films.

There's another Costa-Garvas film that will be released in The Confession. I want to see that and State of Siege as I've enjoyed Z and The Missing. I'm stoked about Limelight which is one of my favorite Chaplin films. The Rose is a wonderful film. How can anyone not love that theme song?

So I am brand new to the Criterion Collection...
I just made my first purchase and grabbed every single Wes Anderson movie that is a part of the Criterion Collection on Blu-ray.
6 movies total, came to $125 with shipping on Amazon... not bad.
All the Wes Anderson ones were $19.99

Next up, I'd love to get the original Godzilla, The Game, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Brazil, and Time Bandits in my next batch.

On a side not, but related to Godzilla...
I just picked up a bootleg DVD of the uncut Japanese version The Return Of Godzilla, also known as Godzilla 1985
Found a site with both the Japanese and American versions on DVD for $12.
Heard the original Japanese cut is far superior and Godzilla 1985 was my favorite Godzilla movie besides the original.

I picked up Fantastic Mr. Fox and Rushmore. All of his films are still on sale on Amazon for 20 bucks.

My favorite way to use the collection actually involves reading this thread and seeing what other people are in to. I make a lot of blind buys and it really is the true magic of the thing.

For anyone interested in the works of Satyajit Ray, there's some very good news as it relates to the Apu trilogy: http://scroll.in/article/709091/The-...9s-Apu-trilogy

Well, it looks like it will come to Criterion but it's going to take some time. At least it's good to know that the people are going to do whatever it takes to give these films the rich presentation it deserves.

That would be awesome. I hope it would include concert footage of the shows at the time and other extras. Maybe it would set the stage for a Criterion release of Live in Pompei and other Floyd-related films just as long as the band members are involved.

    Oh shit....

Here's what is coming out in June: A Blu-Ray release of My Dinner with Andre, A Master Builder by Jonathan Demme as those 2 films are part of a box-set of films featuring Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, The Bridge by Bernhard Wicki, Five Easy Pieces, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders by Jaromil Jires, and.... The Fisher King.

Highly unlikely Criterion would get The Wall. Pompeii is slightly more likely, but at best a longshot. Their record company would want to probably put them out.

That's pretty funny. What a fucked-up film... thankfully, the prospect of a Criterion-sanctioned release of Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii has almost removed the coprophagia imagery that popped up in my brain.
