In response to this question (and having read the subsequent relevant posts), I do think TSN score was incredible - and appropriate to the film. I was lucky enough to see TR at a NY Times talk where he played snippets of what would have been the music in the opening scenes (an Elvis Costello song) and the difference it made to use the TR/AR score. I don't think it's appropriate to compare that to the Mid90's score as its score is perfectly appropriate to the movie and so totally different from TSN.
The problem isn't, I don't think, that they can't do a score on par with TSN again, but that TSN was supposed to be a focal point of the movie, and the rest of their score work so far has been meant to be in the background. TSN was supposed to have your attention throughout the movie, but the others were meant not to take the focus away from what was happening on screen.
Flicked through the last couple of pages and didnt see anything here about this yet

Double J are currently doing a J file on Nine Inch Nails, Archive will be up afterwards if you're not listening to it right now with the tracks removed but all the interview stuff left in.
Listening to it now! Love hearing the interviews from the Triple J archive.

The score EP is also streaming in lossless on Tidal. I think this does call back a bit to TSN score in texture, but the piano technique is quite a departure from Trent's usual quirky style, much more of a 'traditional' grand piano sound, overlaid with their usual synths and sequencing.

I agree. It’s really beautiful.
New stereogum interview.

"...and their upcoming projects include HBO’s Watchmen series; the Netflix release Bird Box... and the thriller Woman In The Window."
Whaaaaat..?!?
Yeah but Trent’s recent shows kissed arse to the likes of @helpmeiminhell who complained the most about Tension. So Trent is showing that it pays to be a pain in the arse on forums
"There’s a couple Nine Inch Nails forums that are … very niche-y for the people that can’t be pleased."
I wonder what forum he could be talking about........hmmmm
Most definitely Patriots Day, I don’t think Trent would be upset about documentaries with positive messages or Fincher films.
Patriots Day was just another film in Peter Berg’s patriot Porn series and the whole message was fuck yeah America. I was thrown off why they wanted to work with Berg but it seems like they made a bad call. All good, that score is great
John Carpenter on Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s Halloween Score Cover: “I’m Impressed”
I'm not buying that he actually gives a shit one way or another, but JC and the Release the Bats! tour was my other big music thing back in late 2016. This track having some attention, finally, is pretty cool.
What about Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (he dropped out but it was still possibly 'a mistake')? Or The Black Ghiandola?

Agreed, that was a great read and one of the best interviews I've read for quite a while.
This was my assumption, as well. The score was really good (though not one of their best) and definitely helped elevate the movie to another level, but of the movies I saw based on the Boston Marathon bombing, Stronger was the better of the two. Patriot's Day WAS honestly better than I expected, to be fair. It's also pretty telling that the description on nin.com says "the film is better than you're expecting."
I'd bet good money on it being Patriots Day. From the beginning I felt it was an unfortunate project for them to associate themselves with and frankly even they always seemed kind of sheepish about it. As I wrote back then:
Trent's expressed misgivings just make me think I had the correct sense of things back then. Frankly, with how insane the world and the United States in particular has become, it's easy for me to understand why they would regret involving themselves in one of Peter Berg's jingoistic romps.
