After looking at the images, I’m now thinking Reznor/Sheridan/Christopherson took bits and pieces of this Carsom footage and used it in both La Mer and TGB.

I was thinking this one:

As far as admin approval, I'm not doing anything without a nod from the Godfather.
can't possibly end up worse than tiny little dot. Also do we have admin approval for this? I know some previous crowdfunding efforts via ETS ultimately weren’t sanctioned (for protection of members). Just a thought.
UPDATE: Seller has posted samples for me on YouTube, as soon as I get the link, I will post them here and we can decide what we're doing.
@Leviathant , can we get a sanction from the admins on this? I don't want to break any forum rules...
Rip em before you post 'em, and then post 'em.
edit: Comparing this to the Paris video I uploaded recently, screenshots forthcoming.
edit edit: Guys. GUYS. .
If one of you is the winning bidder, an was able to secure the PAL tape for $100+shipping, I think we're all happy to chip in and negate that cost, we should just do it in an organized manner - GoFundMe exists now, and is a great way to keep things transparent. We should also factor in the cost of doing a transfer. If you do not have the means, these guys are walking distance from my house now and did a fine job of transferring Fragility 1.0 and Big Day Out, and I'll gladly return the originals to you after the rip because I frankly don't have space for that kind of thing.
in, the very beginning of The Great Below:
It's worth noting that although the projections appear black-and-white in the Paris tape, that's just an artifact of shooting in low light on consumer grade equipment of the time. If you look at the Fragility v1.0 special, you'll see the projections are all in color.
well this thread just took an interesting turn.
I'd chip in for a gofundme
For NIN live archiving, I’d love to pitch in as well and make this available for anyone. (If this would be something allowed on the archive, I’d happily host it too)
Nicely done! You said you might know someone who could transfer it - any way you could make that more definite? As mentioned further up, I'd be happy to get it ripped professionally, and send it your way. If it's already been shipped, never mind that - no need sending it back and forth between continents more often than it ought to be.
Place down the road from my work specialises in video conversion and restoration.
Not interested in a gofundme. I just want the original for my collection, will send out dvd rips to anyone who wants one and upload the footage to youtube soon as i get it.
Will be a couple of weeks due to postage etc.
Will keep updated on whats happening as i get info.
Tape hasnt been shipped yet.
this board fucking rules.
Does Carson want the tapes back?
He could have raised a dispute with ebay and had listings removed while it was investigated as hes aware of said listings and its not like hes some random claiming a random product is his. Its a fairly unique item.
Im willing to chip in to a fund for the non pal version if someone wants to buy it
Could the videos be different? Unlikely but...
Can we update the first post in this thread to include relevant info (who bought it; their plans for sharing once it finally arrives in Australia, etc)? This was confusing as fuck to navigate this morning.
Here's a summary:
Australian user @the_tic_begins was able to purchase the PAL version of the tape for $100. Several people offered to start a GoFundMe page to cover the costs, but he (she?) declined, saying that they wanted the physical tape for their collection anyway. They have a transfer shop just up the road that will be able to digitize the tape, which can then be burned to DVDs, uploaded, etc. Given shipping times to AU, expect a several week gap before anything happens.
User @paul_guyet has spoken with David Carson about the tapes, and Carson has indicated that he's not really interested in having the tapes back. So despite the fact that there's still a different version available on ebay, there's not much of a point in pooling together to buy that one and return it to him.
Two things I should add: according to the seller "some footage its the same on all 4 tapes" and, second, those nice color images are from THIS tape, the "non PAL" version.
I am still waiting on actual samples of the video from the seller; I'll share those here as soon as I get them.

Seeing as a significant amount of research and finance went in to procuring this visual tape and eventually its transfer, perhaps someone (preferably Levianthant, since he has the inside line) could forward the digital transfer to TR for possible inclusion on the Fragile Deluxe 5.1 20th Anniversary edition we're all hoping finally materialises next year.
Would be a neat little extra a la some of the promotional stuff from AATCHB, and would also show the man just how fervent his fanbase is for such a package..
I would love to get a rip in a reasonably high quality format. For the sake of comparison, the combined filesize of Fragility v1.0 & Big Day Out, as received from Videosmith, was over 23gb. It was ripped in DVCPRO 50, 48.8 Mbps, 704x480 29.590fps (NTSC DV) with two channel 48khz 16-bit audio.
To my surprise, Vegas didn't support the codec, so I ended up having to buy a professional codec in order to transcode it to the MP4s I later distributed.
Recieved tracking number. Tape is on its way via USPS.

Would this thing help with reading the tape? A local goodwill has it for $100...
Ideally, you would use a U-matic SP deck to play the reel. It could still be played on a U-matic deck, but there would be a slight loss of quality.
When I was living in NoHo a few years ago, I grabbed this deck from a post house ad on Craigslist. It was $100 and I would have kept it had I not transferred all my reels before leaving California.
