Is Ahead of Ourselves the first NIN song that's kind of traditionally fading out? Can't think of any other song in their catalogue right now.
Anyone else getting flashbacks to that last Tweaker album from Play The Goddamned Part?
My mind : It's mostly slow/ambiant but I kinda love it, and even feel better with GBDD now that we can put it with others. I felt instant love with I'm Not From This World, one of the most frightening instrumentals with hidden Ghosts tracks.
There is something very emotional about Over And Out to me, just wow
This is incredible and I can't wait to go get the vinyl on Friday. I can think of few other artists who have released such an obscure, demanding work after such a long career. Miles Davis, Scott Walker and David Bowie are obvious examples. Even on Broken and TDS, Trent's pop leanings were more on display than they are here. Here, the arguably most accessible song is Shit Mirror, and that's still a far cry from, say, Closer.
This could easily be Trent's artistic peak for me. He's clearly not interested in crafting singles or catering to mainstream audience here. Instead, he and Atticus have created a masterpiece that doesn't outstay its welcome, and appears to draw lines to stuff like Throbbing Gristle, Coil and even more avant-garde stuff like Art Zoyd, or the aforementioned Miles Davis. It's sort of everything Ghosts should have been. What a ride.

“Shit Mirror.”
True story: HM leaked whilst I was on honeymoon. I had an Android tablet with me, a Google Nexus 7, first gen. I managed to download and unpack the ZIP on it, and was planning to listen on the plane home. Back then that airline insisted on electronic devices being turned off for takeoff, and that generation of Nexus 7 had a ludicrious bug that meant it would not power on unless you had a microusb cable attached. And I didn't have a microusb cable with me in the cabin. So I had the leak on the tablet, but couldn't power the damn tablet on.
On topic: I think there's potential for some great remixes of this material!

This album is a work of art.
phwoar!
Please let them play - I'm Not from this world
at RAH
I caved (found the full thing on YT)...i'm going to need a few listens to process this but Shit Mirror and Ahead of Ourselves are stand outs right now. GBDTD is starting to work for me and i can't wait to hear some remixes eventually!
I'm trying very hard to hold out till Meltdown on Friday... You guys aren't making it easy!
Damnit, first two listens in and I don't seem to like it. Funny enough I held out on listening to God Break Down the Door and find it to be a favorite so far. Hope this one is a grower and I'll appreciate the songs more after I saw some of them live. I'm rather fond of Shit Mirror though.
What the hell is this shit?
Spoiler: I LOVE IT
Ahead of Ourselves has some awkward drum fills that makes me feel TR did them live himself.
Over and Out is like a compilation of various NIN sounds from the past 20 years:
- drumbeat reminding of Echoplex and later VMOE,
- synth noises from Ghosts (#35 aka A Familiar Taste in particular),
- something that sounds like strings plucking - a sound found extensively on HM and TGWTDT,
- another synth melody sounding very much like Empty Places Reprise from GG
- the magnificent ending, similar to Leaving Hope munis whale noises
Over and Out needs to be praised more.
Shit Mirror, Ahead of Ourselves and God Break Down the Door should be staples this tour.
Not sure how Over and Out will translate live, but it'd be a great closing track like LITS tour, namely In This Twilight/Zero-Sum.
My package for this, NTAE and AV vinyl copies were mailed yesterday. Will await link from NIN before I listen.
Just got confirmation my cd has been dispatched, will try and hold out till then as I hate using dodgy sites that end up trying to install endless malware on my laptop
