JESUS GOD those new album covers are AWFUL.
That shit is baffling.
I first got into NIN with Broken.
I'd take a tattoo of that orange n, if someone could do it right.
What in the FUCK is the new cover supposed to be?

I almost don't even want to add this on nincatalog if nothing else for the principal of it all.
Maybe add a shameless cash grab section?
Oh wow these are bad. Sure hope the boss had nothing to do with this as they are without a doubt the ugliest album covers I have ever seen. No way those artists listened to the album beforehand. I am so glad I wont care about this hole in my collection. Absolutely unnecessary.
i really like the me i’m not remix - its not for everyone but its good and not made by talentless hacks like richard prince (its by a member of the knife!!) so please don’t compare it, thanks

They should have gotten BOTP and EMEK to do new covers.
This LA Times article sums up my thoughts on this matter.
Imma need "fuck it, download my shit for free" era Trent to make a statement about this
i think that’s actually the best way to handle this. we’ll just pretend like these covers don’t exist. a rich elitist will buy these over priced copies for their collection. then someday when they die and the estate sells their assets, these will go in the trash coz duh, they’re not on nincatlog.
Year Zero universe TR in 2022: (jailed for rocking against fascism)
real life TR in 2022: (proudly advertising new versions of old albums that cost $2,500 because they have hideous new cover art)
Which was the real dystopia?
All joking aside, I know we have a reputation for negativity here but frankly I am proud to see this thread brimming with so much disgust and dismay. Trent these days might be inclined to roll his eyes and say "my fans bitch about everything" but sorry dude, the negativity is more than warranted here. Yes, the new covers are horrendous and I'd be stunned if the artists even listened to the albums they were "reimagining" but the worst part of this is how glaringly out-of-touch and bougie the whole concept is. As was stated before, the term conspicuous consumption is right on the money, no pun intended. These "collectibles" exist to be little more than status symbols, displays of disposable income, exclusively for fans who can drop $2,500 on a record without a second thought, and to be proud of being involved in that, especially with the ways things are now, is an incredibly disappointing look for an artist I consider to have as much talent and integrity as Trent. Definitely stands in sharp contrast to what I expect from the man's politics. NFTs would be a lot worse but this is nearing the same ballpark.
It's like Trent saw all the knuckleheads calling the Halsey album a sellout move and went "lol no, THIS is a sellout move!"
I would love to believe this but I think it's an exceedingly generous reading. Trent retweeted the NIN account tweet from his own profile and I don't think he would do that if he actually thought the project was stupid. If it was something they weren't enamored with, I would expect them to just ignore mentioning it all on official channels.
But for the record the Olof Dreijer remix of Me, I'm Not is dope as hell.
I think I just realized what my biggest problem with these pieces of shit is; it's not the hilarious price or the garbage artwork, it's the fact that there is NO sense of reference to the music this art is representing. It's like neither of the artists had even the slightest idea what they were supposed to be reimaging. I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if these artists just had these images lying around or saved on their fucking phones and Interscope reached out and said "$$$" and they said "$$$" and that's why these things exist.
The fact I can't go to NIN.com right now and buy the vanilla version of TDS makes this all the more obnoxious.
Why not just sell regular vinyls autographed for an appropriate price (whatever that may be)? As a comparison, MJK of Tool etc sells signed CDs, albums, posters, books, wine bottles (CDs seem to be $150 now, a new vinyl $275). Sure, cash grab and all that, but if someone really would enjoy having one (or more), many more people can do so. $2500 is way out of range for the vast majority of people. At $100 (just referencing that as MJK had CDs for $100 a year ago), that opens it up to a lot long time fans who would treasure a signed item.

Billie Eilish just posted her cover art and has stated the profits will go to the Iovine Foundation. So if she bad that much power to get the money sent to charity, that means Trent didnt want to bother to turn this into something helpful.
And yeah, $2500 for artwork is a bargain anyway. If it was Banksy you guys would be all over it.
I appreciate/ acknowledge the Banksy point. More so here, I don't think the artists "made pictures" for an assigned record. (That would indicate premeditation for the whole project.) I wouldn't be surprised if a mid-level record exec was handed a portfolio of corporate owned artwork and a list of records and was told to match the pictures to the records. It was probably one of those elementary work sheets where you draw a line from one item on one side of the page to the "correct" item on the other side of the page. The MLRE probably was given a new pack of eight crayons and had a good time making colorful swirly lines to connect the art to the music. (Ok I'll stop, NGL, I'd do that job in a heart-beat for the stupid money they get paid.)
yeah i was just gonna say maybe they hired some artists to make artworks and then assigned those to albums that in any way match
The difference is that NIN isn’t an active artist on Interscope, they might not have as much control.
That being said any animosity that happened from leaving the label and the Lights In The Sky rights block also seems contrary to Trent appearing in The Defiant Ones… but maybe I’m reading too much into it.
Ok, so now I'm seeing that all the profits from these releases go to charity. If that's the case, then I don't really take issue with this. I used to volunteer with a local art gallery, and fundraisers like this are pretty common. But that wasn't really made clear from the initial write ups I saw on the whole thing.

Trent isn't in the habit of ripping off fans. I assume he was just excited to lend his name and intellectual property (the albums) to a good cause.

I think that is my biggest issue with it. Who is it for? Not one person saw this and thought, I must have it. So if the casual and main fans are running, the hardcore collectors are running (I own everything, aside from vinyl version of Ghosts, and I wouldn't buy this if it was the price of a normal NIN record), who is left? The elite? Makes the Year Zero post above more poignant.
And no way the NIN response was sarcastic, whoever says that is really reaching.
edit: i see from above that it was for charity. well i guess i would love to know if TR saw this beforehand and said, looks great.

We’re over thinking nin’s stake in this project. Trent isn’t hurting for 2500$. It’s about the label and doing something to commemorate their long term success and using it to donate. It isn’t about us, the fans. we are taking it personally because these records and their artwork mean so much to us and because these designs are indeed shitty and seemingly uninspired by the actual music. Trent is probably “honored” because his band played a huge part in what interscope became. NIN’s inclusion is about success and not about redefining these albums.
