The Gray Chapter is an excellent album and leaps and bounds over anything All Hope Is Gone had to offer. It amazes me how much these songs grew on me and how I felt compelled to listen to the album again and again. I think I'm on my tenth listen at this point, and I'm very glad I waited to hear everything in its entirety rather than listen to each song individually as they were released. This beast has the seething anger from Iowa merged perfectly with the dark atmospherics of The Subliminal Verses. It really is a perfect union of both previous albums and the end result is fantastic.
AOV is not only the best song on the album, but quite frankly it's becoming my favorite Slipknot song. Corey's vocal delivery is spot on as the track grows and becomes more and more frantic before breaking into a very unexpected, but oddly welcoming, interlude before blasting through the final two minutes and bleeding straight into The Devil In I. If The Negative One is Iowa's long lost fifteenth track, than Killpop most certainly holds the same title for The Subliminal Verses. Killpop is dark, beautiful, haunting, hypnotic, and disturbing with unsettling and depraved emotions wrapped perfectly inside its three and a half minute running time. Goodbye could have easily been the album's final track. It certainly feels like something is ending. But it works great as the closer to the first half of the album and I really enjoyed how the song builds into a final blast of acceptance and defiance. It's made very clear on this track that the band is confronting their loss and choosing to move on and accept that things have changed.
Even the weaker tracks on this album, specifically Nomadic and The One That Kills The Least, have something great to offer. I never feel the need to skip through either of them, and they're both well crafted songs, I just feel like when compared to what came before and what comes after, these are definitely the least memorable parts of the album. Despite this criticism, they're still really good, and that's a huge compliment to the strength and versatility of The Gray Chapter. Custer is my second favorite song out of the bunch, and will most certainly make chaos erupt through every single live venue where this is played. I picked up the deluxe edition and I have to say the album feels more complete with The Burden closing out everything as opposed to If Rain Is What You Want. The latter is a dreary and somber piece that works well within the overall emotional resonance present throughout The Gray Chapter. The themes of loss, grief, and bittersweet acceptance come full circle, but whereas If Rain Is What You Want ends on a note of strength, The Burden ends on a more vulnerable aspect of remaining uncertainty. Which I feel is the entire point of this album. Tragedy must be embraced, learned from, and ultimately put behind you so that you can continue on with your life, but ultimately it changes you and makes one realize that more is up ahead. The difference is now you're more prepared to face it when it finally shows again.
I feel this is a very solid effort. I think this record is a good synthesis of the different aspects of the band and what they have done over the years. I was kind of on the fence about what they may make after AHIG even though i liked that album. I'm glad they found it within themselves to dig deep and put out another good album. In that way it reminds me of LOG's Resolution.
Why do people really hate All Hope is Gone? I seriously wonder.
For me, some of it sounds kinda phoned in and forced. Seems like they felt like it had to heavy to make people happy. It has some amazing songs on it though. Also doesn't help that half of it is Stone Sour and the other is Slipknot trying to conform to what the fans wanted in order to stay relevant. New album is a slipknot album, 100%.
Its boring. Minus 3 or 4 songs.
I like the new album, but after a week of listening to it I wonder how much staying power it will have for the band. It's very much an album for the band now, but I can't see them playing some of these new songs in 5 years or so.
I see Custer being a staple. And devil in I as well as maybe negative one.
Just finished the album and they sound like a band that has lost their rhythm section and song writing team...
Oh yeah they did.
IMO unless something big changes, Vol 3 was their last consistantly good record.
while I've not had a chance to listen to the new lp yet, Corey was on The Nerdist podcast today and it was great. Can't say I paid much attention to Slipknot after Vol 3, but definitely in the mood for some new stuff
Also remember that Joey was responsible for them not being able to properly get together and jam out ideas. He pretty much recorded the drum tracks on his own and pretty much the rest of the band just had to put shit together according to his drumming. Joey ruined that album.
Isn't that what most drummers do though? Plenty of drummers go in and record their parts first. Thought that was a common practice.
In Conan's case no because he is saying the band never really jammed together prior to going to the studio. Most, if not, all bands prior to recording always jam or have some layout of what the song is going to be. In the AHIG, the band went in not knowing how the song's structure will be.
Tonight is my first Slipknot show since 2001. I'm really excited to hear the new stuff.

Yes! Heavy MTL! They came two years ago and it was amazing!
Fuck yes. Finally!!!
Sadly no Dallas, but I'll totally make the drive to Austin for that. My best friend is a big Motionless in White fan, so this will be great!
Outdoor shows suck. That being said, I will begrudgingly be going to the Indianapolis date.
I love/hate outdoor shows. Like when the weather is nice, they're the best. However, being in Texas, it's always blisteringly hot.
Hell yeah! I'm definitely going to the Pittsburgh show! Hopefully, Slipknot plays a couple new songs on that leg of the tour. "cough" AOV! "cough"
Was about to post that...
damn.
Setlist is bitchin'.
Love the song, the video not so much. Clown could have done better.
That setlist is pretty much perfect. Switch before I forget with liberate and I'd be one happy fucker. I would love to hear them do Iowa or gently as an extended encore though. And man, Corey is on fire. Love this man!
