AC/DC, are boring. I won't deny the music they make is well performed but a lot of it sounds the same.

I forget which singer it is (maybe Bon Scott?) but he sounds like he's singing through gritted teeth. Always kept me from getting into them. That and one of my best friends in high school didn't like them so I didn't bother...peer pressure and no money, yeah?

Thing is, I don't think that even if they changed the singer (even to Mick Jagger), that the impact as a whole, that they have, wouldn't be there. And besides, you don't really want to know the lyrical content of "Mistress For Christmas" do you?

Maybe it sounds better after a flat of beer... (I know too many people around here who would listen to AC/DC this way...)

They toured with Axl Rose and that actually sounded better.

    Knocked Loose

Can’t say I understand the hype. Not a super hardcore fan but even aside from that don’t get the mega hype rising this band gets. They’re good and listenable but ehhhh.

    See them live.

Here's my IG post from seeing them at Webster Hall last year. Place went off for an hour straight. Listen with headphones if possible.

As far as Frank Ocean goes—channel ORANGE is a WAY better record than Blonde. I feel like the anticipation for that record fed into its hype and "legacy" as a modern classic now.

Hell, I even think nostalgia/ultra is better.

to this I just say.... absolutely no... come on. Really? I'm lost man. Kid A is probably overrated generally, but nooooooooooooooooooooooo

Maybe I gotta relisten to Blonde, but... this feels like we probably won't agree

I also think I prefer Amnesiac to Kid A, and I was probably getting at that idea more than anything when i say kid a is overrated; it’s an incredible album, but I think even they’ve surpassed it. I listened to some of Blonde again; it’s good.

EDIT: maybe “overrated” isn’t the right word...

Same. I'm sure nostalgia plays a huge role in that, despite what I tell myself.

I kid. But wow. That is one hot goddamned take to me.

Channel Orange is spectacular. Spec-fucking-tacular. Blonde is better. It's Kid A in scope and importance (although superior to that record in quality and less significant, probably, in terms of reach). I know a lot of people were eagerly awaiting Boys Don't Cry or whatever it would become, but I was not. Blonde was an unanticipated surprise to me so I, at least, am unaffected by that factor.

    Channel Orange
was a stellar record that broke rules, broke ground, and sounded great. Blonde was an intentional bucking of everything, of good will, of aesthetic, and a striking out on one's own artistic terms. And if I were to continue the comparison, it was also a hell of a lot ballsier for Frank Ocean to drop that than it was for Radiohead to release Kid A. But you certainly can't dance to a lot of it. And it doesn't groove the same way. So, I 100% accept anyone anyone's personal preference for either record, though I think a much stronger artistic merit case can be made for Blonde.

I won't even allow Nostalgia Ultra into the discussion (though it's better than 90% of the records in its genre).

My hot take on Frank Ocean is that I've never been able to get into Endless.
I feel ya on that. I applaud him for making Blonde and the risks he took in releasing something a bit more abstract/moody compared to the bombastic vibes Orange provided ... but the songs just aren't there for me and the aesthetic/mood isn't there either. Which honestly, is a shame because I am usually all in for something a bit more experimental and left field from an artist, but still sounding like it's in their wheelhouse—Xiu Xiu's Girl With a Basket of Fruit for example.

I don't think we'll get another feel good record like Orange/Ultra from Ocean again ... and honestly, after last night's tragic news about the passing of his younger brother from a car accident, he may not return to music for awhile. I wouldn't blame him. Hope he's doing okay.

Also I'm right there with you, I listened to Endless maybe twice and never revisited.

SIDE NOTE—Kid A is one of the most important records in my entire life.

Scott Stapp's tribute to the Florida Marlins is a classic.

Did you feel like Scott Stapp on a cliff? I can almost imagine you walking out of Wal-Mart triumphantly with your arms raised.

And plenty of stuff that might not be considered "good" that I still love:

This is one of Black Sabbath's best songs in their entire history of all vocalists. This is probably my favorite song also.

This is a close second. Mid 2000's Dio Sabbath is great.

When I was working on NIN playlist recently, I decided to look up what was actually being played on radio in 1989, I was a teenager at the time. And I realized it's not NOW that I completely lost touch with what is being played "on radio", I NEVER had that. :-) I don't recognize most of the "billboard hot 100" names, so fuck all that (#1 Chicago? who?). Controversial? Probably not. :-)
